Just Really Sad

A friend just sent me a link to the KSL article about Rocky getting another award for standing up for equality.

I’m sad because the comments on the KSL blog are just SO mean and visceral.

Some of the more tempered comments are suggesting that the homophobes are LDS.

I don’t believe it. I am not LDS. But I know the religion well and have a great deal of respect for the LDS church and my many LDS friends.

I dare anyone who identifies themselves as LDS or a Christian to support statements like:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your knowlede, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

Or this one:

Rocky, you’re nothing but a joke!!!! It’s sad that in today’s day and age we have someone like you in your position that won’t support our own COMMANDER IN CHEIF, but if there’s the slightest chance to support a minority of GAYS and LESBIANS you’re the first in line. What a washed up waste of political power. YOU’RE REDICULOUS ROCKY!!!!!!!!

I am just horrified! What is going on in this city? Is just Salt Lake City or is it happening all over the country?

I fear that we have become a country at war with itself. Half of us in fear and the other half hating those of us who refuse to be guided by fear.

May God forgive us all.

PS: To those of you who rant against Rocky, I have yet to hear ONE substantive fact that could be construed as bad for Salt Lake City. On the other hand, I can list many many great accomplishments, awards, and nationally and internationally recognized successes and would be pleased to list them here if petitioned to do so.

I don’t care what you call yourself. Anyone with hate in their heart for anyone is neither Christian nor good.

Hate has no place in community. “End of debate”

Looks like the most hate filled posts have the worst spelling and grammar. Maybe hate takes hold easier in a climate of ignorance? I’m not trying to be rude here, but I have noticed the same pattern in a few other places on the internet.

I always wonder when people quote Leviticus if they’ve ever read Leviticus. There is much that is acceptable nowdays that was considered an abomination in Leviticus, like cutting facial hair, wearing two types of cloth, certain types of flesh foods. The selective reading of Leviticus to condemn one thing and not the others is rather hypocritical.

I must admit, I have heard many a great man say something along the lines of “bigotry is born of ignorance.”

Did you even read the whole post that quotes Leviticus? Or did you just pick out the part that you wanted to comment on. If you read the whole post, (you too, Jenni), you will see that it was obviously written in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

Thad, thanks for the heads up. I was going by what was posted here.

Quoting Leviticus to support continuing hatred and bigotry? It’s a chapter from a story book, dude, just a story book. Indeed, the same story book used to justify killing hundreds of thousands of innocents over the past two thousand years. I wish these bible-thumping idiots would at least try to construct their arguments of exclusion and bigotry based on something slightly more substantive than self-serving snippets of quotes from a story book.

When people focus hate on those who they believe are different with equal assiduousness as they focus love on those whom they believe are the same, maybe they will realize that we are all alike, all deserving and all praiseworthy.

  8. Ken Bingham Says:

I sense a lot of hateful feelings in many who have commented in this post. You can’t fight hate with more hate. If you hate someone because they hate you, it makes you a hypocrite. That is what Jesus taught.

  9. Nephi Says:

Might you, Ken, indulge the rest of us and identify the “hate” that you sense in the posts. Referring to someone as a bigot, or even a hate-filled bigot, does not render the referring party a hate-monger. Indeed, I think you will find upon cursory examination that most liberal do-gooders do not hate anyone; rather, they merely point out the unending stream of hypocrisy that tends to flow from conservatives who support their causes using the bible, the book of mo, or some other scriptural reference whose origin always relates back to the telling of stories centuries old.
