Citizen Candidates Take Over Utah Races

Surprise and shock were expressed by many over the large turnout at the first ever candidate training seminar hosted by the Salt Lake County Democratic Party at the SLC library on Saturday, March 25.

Over 100 candidates attended the three-hour seminar. The quality and passion of the many citizen candidates is inspiring. The turnout reflects the ongoing sea change in politics occurring in Utah. Many of the candidates are former Republicans, frustrated to the breaking-point by the just-finished 2006 legislative session.

Similar sentiment appears among the many new Republican candidates now challenging Republican incumbents. The situation represents an organic uprising of concerned citizens who have seen and heard enough of Buttars, Christiansen, and the many other like-minded politicians whose legislative bills and political positions reflect little more than political pandering to special interests of the religious right.

We are seeing the beginning of a bi-partisan reclamation of Utah’s Capitol Hill. Let us hope the entire community will rise to the occasion, get involved, and VOTE!
