This is classic Jon Stewart, whom I admire and generally agree with 100%. My guess is, however, that were TKL or someone of similar ilk to review the video, they would come away vomiting just like I do when I review statements or videos of Sean Hannity or Ann Coulter or other like-minded pundits. Nevertheless, the fact remains: Bush lied; people died!

I don’t like Hannity or Coulter. I think Coulter goes way over the top just to piss of liberals and it just isn’t nessecary. However, Stewart is a comedian and thats about it. If it wasn’t for the Bush Administration, the show would be struggling today. Which, hey whateve works for success I guess. Once Steve Carell, and his wife “Money Bunny” left the show, it just hasn’t been the same. Even Steven was just a funny bit, and well Carell is just a increditably funny guy.

Anyways, I think Stewart and Coulter are cut from the same cloth, just one from the left side and one from the right. It’s people like them that really keep a divided line between two parties.

And you know, be a little more orignally than Bush Lied, People Died. Cause it happened with Clinton, and it happened with Kennedy, and it happened with Nixon, and it happened with Johnson.

Apologies to TKL for incorrectly associating s/he with the Hannity/Coulter crowd. We appear to agree on one thing: using Stewart, Moore, Hannity, Coulter, etc., to base arguments is, with nothing more, a losing proposition. Could this be the beginning of a groundswell of common thought?

At any rate, and per TKL’s suggestion: “Bush lies, America cries!”

PS. How’s about that DeLay taking a permanent leave of absence from the House? Makes me want to go kiss Ann Coulter on a place where the sun doesn’t shine.

Moore is in a class way worse than anyone else. Not cause he is against Bush or GOP, because he is short sided and ignorant. He thinks he can use half truths and myths and pass them along as facts.

Delay knew he was going to drop out of the race. He just went through the process to keep others from filing, that way the party can hand pick someone to replace him. Both sides do this all the time, and it is part of the attitude that “We know better than the voter” which is the only thing that will piss me off.

The big problem with the likes of Stewart and Coulter is they reninforce the divided line. The attitude that both GOP and DNC have it’s us against them is BS. Neither have the right answer, and neither are close to the right answer. The end of the day we are all Americans, and yes the country does move forward, not at the pass as the John Kerry’s and others would like, but its not gonna go back like what the Far Right wants, or what the far left fear. We will move forward at a steady pace like we always do.

Just becasue there is an R next to mine, or James or Tumor, does make us greedy, war mangors, just because there is a D next to your name, doesn;t mean you are socialist or believe in Communism hasn’t been tested, or want to tax the crap out of people and have socialized medicine.

The Democrat Party made it clear to us that we don’t belong with them, and the Republican party said “Welcome”, and allow us a place at the table where we can debate and be involved. Cliff scoffed at our use of Socially Liberal Fically Conservative, however in the 6 or so states we have each worked in, and the many others livedin, this is the moderate middle. Stuck between two parties, well non of us choose to join the libertarain party, this is a two party system and we choose to be invovled.

So looks like the D’s give up Tom Daschle and now GOP loses Delay. Which opens up room for younger people to get involved and find their place. Thats what I think about the Delay news.

Stewart is a comedian. Coulter is a political mercenary. Stewart gets rich shaping political fodder into humor. Coulter gets rich fanning divisiveness. I’m reminded of Stewart on Crossfire where he attacked (and defeated) the format of combat journalism. Compare that to Coulter on Bill Maher’s HBO show where she can’t make a coherent point or be funny. Stewart is politically even handed. He blasted Kerry throughout the campaign. He criticized the dems for not backing Feingold’s censure initiative. Stewart is willing to point out the stupidity in his own party. You can’t blame him for the abundance of material he gets from Bush & Co.

The only similarity between Stewart and Coulter is that they’re both getting rich. But as Stewart pointed out on Crossfire, his show is comedy and it’s preceded by puppets making prank phone calls. The “news media” should be held to a higher standard. The Crank Yankers and Crossfire are gone. We’d be better off if Coulter was gone, too.

  6. Ted Kennedy's Liver Says:

I actually saw Stewart on Crossfire, I thought he was a bitch. He accoused them of being whats wrong with this country. Only to turn around and hide behind the fact that puppets that make crank calls were on after him. IT DOESN”T MATTER, way to many people that are of the same mind turn to that show for his insight and information.

If he puts himself in the public eye and takes a stance on issues, and actively campaigns onthem, then it doesn’t matter if he is on Comedy Central, CNN or even the Playboy channel. He is just as bad as the rest. Just because he is a celebrity (low rated one) doesn’t make him an expert on whats wrong with this country or what people should do, he no different than the rest of us noobs.

The only real benifit to Stewart and yes Coulter, and I thought about this after I posted earlier today, is they both get people fired up and paying attention. People that make your blood boil and will shout at the top of their lungs about something that you are competly against, and get you involved, well in a way that is a healthy sign of our democracy.

At least we don’t strap bombs to our bodies and go running into Starbucks. I was very proud in 2000 to be apart of this country, well until the US Supreme Court ended the election. The world watched as people stood down a line holding signs and shouting what they believed in, we weren’t killing each other, we weren’t putting people in jail, we were holding our debate publically. The reason why I disagreed with the Supreme court’s ruling to stop the election, was votes being counted on air for the whole world to see. People sitting in a room looking over every vote making sure that their intended vote was recorded.

What a thing that was, what a positive sign for democracy from the one country that trys to influence the world on Freedom and Choice.

Again, I agree (for the most part) with TKL on the Stewart/Coulter phenomena. The good part is the fact that these pundits get folks’ blood to boiling, while the bad part is that these same folks whose blood is boiling then assume that they have all the evidence in the world necessary to support their cause.

The assumption is, however, generally a bad one to make, and this applies to both sides of the political spectrum. In other words, once Stewart or Coulter have stated what folks want to hear - e.g., Bush lied or Bush did not lie - the folks then feel armed with sufficient information to hit the airwaves, blogs, water coolers, etc., and repeat what they just heard from their respective pundit as undisputable fact. Unfortunately, however, they fail to conduct any independent research of their own - e.g., reading articles or editorials - to confirm what they just heard. And as a result, the cycle of crap-sloshing spins out of control and gets nobody anywhere.

As mentioned previously, I generally agree with Stewart (and Michael Moore for that matter), and staunchly disagree with Coulter and Hannity. Having said that, it is, hopefully, rare that I will take a statement from Stewart or Moore as fact without doing at least a modicum of research to check the veracity of the statement. Likewise, I generally try and check the veracity of statements made by Hannity or Coulter before dismissing them outright as political deceit; afterall, they are smart folks who are not 100% wrong (98% maybe …). Were folks to take these additional steps, not only would they be involved, as TKL correctly notes, but they would also be informed.

So far, we appear a long way from informed involvement - it is just too easy for one to simply repeat as fact the juicy soundbite they just heard from their favorite pundit, be it Stewart or Coulter.
