One More Correction for Paul Rolly
I was embarrased, to say the least, to get a phone call from Ed Firmage today telling me about the Paul Rolly column (permalink) in which I am accused of ripping off a website. It is particulary ironic given that Paul’s column today contained no less than three corrections.
Now he’s got one more to make.
Nobody ripped off anything. You want a web site? Pick a theme. We’ll start from there. The web site was clearly a work in progress - “under construction” if you will - and NOT for public consumption. (Somebody obviously sent Rolly an e-mail with a link that was not meant for him.) Note the screen shot of the draft web site. What exactly was ripped off anyway? The contribution limits? The red? The blue maybe?
The engine called CivicSpace is in the public domain. There are hundreds of themes for it.
Most web sites are based on existing themes and modified from there,
certainly most campaign websites. This one is no exception. Perhaps Mr. Herrera was unaware of that.
My mistake for not putting it on a “development server” where Rolly couldn’t find it.
My mistake for not adding a level of complexity to a colaborative effort by well-intentioned volunteers.
But are we to believe that as the column states, “Herrera says someone from Utah e-mailed him a link to the site,” and that he was “livid?”
You must be kidding?
What do you suppose the chances are that while Sim hadn’t even seen it yet, that Joe public from Utah found it, AND figured out that it vaguely resembled a non-candidate web site from California that never went live AND knew Herrera well enough to care to send him the link, AND that Herrera called Rolly?
Let the masterful story telling begin.
The column also says the “Web site [was] created for Manuel Herrera, who was running for mayor of San Jose, Calif., until he withdrew recently.”
According to this article dated Feb 7, Herrera was one of 6 candidates “vying” for a June 6th primary. According the April issue of this newsletter Herrera had already dropped out. (4 months ago)
Since that newsletter mentions future events as early as March 21st, I’m guessing the candidate dropped out prior to then, long before the primary, and certainly not “recently” as measured by the length of time his “toe” was “in the water.” (less than 2 months)
According to the Santa Clara County Clerk, he filed no financial disclosures.
The web site was a work in progress under a domain name I went ahead and bought so no one else would get it, like they did www.simgill.com (update: SimGill.com was subsequesntly surrendered to the Gill campaign) (why don’t you investigate THAT?). It is not mentioned on any material associated in with Sim’s campaign. It was simply a volunteer effort, and a labor of love that was delayed pending other priorities like raising $10,000 for ActBlue-Utah (a real story) WHICH, I’m pleased to say, is days away from going live.
Paul my friend, you’ve got my number. You’ve dialed it before. Why didn’t you just call me?

I love all the pictures of Rolly. I think he ripped off Captain kangaroo’s look.
Is he supposed to be some kind of local cult hero?

Hey Cliff, I guess you’re famous enough to take down. You know what they say in Afganistan, “the tallest poppy gets cut down first.”
I feel sorry for Rolly. He’s under a lot of pressure to come up with something interesting on deadline. I’ve been there. You have two choices, work insane hours, or compromise your integrity. I couldn’t take it.
You have a pile of stories in progress, some pan out, some don’t. Often in desperation, you gotta just go with something even if you don’t have all the facts, or some of the facts don’t support the story.
In your case, I’m quite sure he didn’t call you because he knew if he had, he wouldn’t have had a story. So Rolly made his deadline at your expense.
The ratio of corrections to stories in his column in since Wells left means he’s either flaming out, or playing too much golf.

Why Cliff do you even bother with this idiot. He’s a gossip columnist for a foreign owned (Denver) paper in a state full of bigoted hypocrites.
Half of Salt Lake throws the Utah section out along with the other “special” sections before taking it into the shitter anyway. We’re here for the nature of the space not the nature of the local political scene.
Thanks to your post, I read Rolly for the first time. My wife just informed me Rolly and Wells is just Rolly now. She said it’s like Ann Landers without her meds.
It’s no wonder his article is mostly corrections about a bunch of stupid shit no one cares about anyway.
Cliff, stick with the good shit. Let Rolly fester in the feces of his pitiful career choices.

Why bother is right. Why bother? Let’s talk about something that means something. I thought this blog was for progressive, newsworthy events. Who the *%@%$* cares about whomever this Rolly is and whatever the *&%$* he says. Cliff, get over yourself. There are two god damn wars going on.

Why is Paul Rolly bucking to top Ann “the hot-looking slut” Coulter’s discredited position in the news media? If Ann had refrained from creative embellishment of facts, she would remain the conservative darling of neo-con rhetoric; instead she finds herself now booted from conservative local rags across America because she can’t be trusted, even by her neo-con diehard base. Who’da ever guessed! Rolly now appears guilty of the same journalistic “crime” - embellishment of facts to create a story where none exists.
Shame on you, Paul. The next time I see you dining at Lamb’s - one of your frequent lunch-time slop havens - I will view you not as a newsworthy source of local information, but as a Rovian manipulator of political reality for personal gain.
Today’s news is about Coulter herself, not about what she writes or speaks. Journalistic integrity - your journalistic integrity, Paul - demands nothing less than a retraction of the false and embellished commentary you provided your readers!

The irony here is that while Rolly most likely supports Gill’s candidacy, news blurbs of this type actually detract from Gill’s electability.
Yo Paul, do you have any info to report in favor of the “Orin’s” campaign? You might just provide the secret weapon that Ashdown is waiting for!

This kind of thing is just going around this week.

Rolly loses all credibility if he can’t do the right thing and make amends where amends are due. The Internet provides content - some covered by copyright, but most not. Rolly, in essnce, libels Lyon by accusing him of copyright infringement. Give us the facts, there, Rolly. If you have a case, then make it. If you don’t - or if you have now realized that you don’t - then do the right thing and pull back the defamatory staements you provided the media. OneNephi, above, nailed it on the head - journalistic integrity demands nothing less. Your house is glass, don’t forget!

Paul Rolly is one of the most likable guys you’d ever want to meet. A lovely man really…to your face. Seemingly genuine, caring, and and man of conscience.
Will he lie to make a story work? Will he avoid the obvious questions for greater impact? Only his “hairdresser knows for sure.”
Pending a discussion with his hairdresser, I can’t quite figure out how easily certain facts escape him, like the fact that the home page of the website clearly says “Great Campaign Slogan Goes Here”.
I suppose Rolly thought that was Sim’s campaign slogan. Maybe in addition to Paul’s degree in polysci, he has one in subliminal advertising.
Contratulations Paul. You just committed libel against a very nice guy who ripped of nothing. The very idea that Sim knew nothing about it means that Cliff is a completely an imbicile, out there building websites just for the yuck of it.
Cliff doesn’t strike me as an imbicile.

It is a bit ironic that news often times becomes fact when printed no matter how ill-researched or misrepresented.
In the short time that I have gotten to know you Cliff, my one thought of you is honesty. You have demonstrated genuine love for your fellow-man. Could it be that our high standards of life are hard to match? Maybe that is why there are a some who become frightened by such quality, and they seek to tear it down.
You are a hero in my book Cliff. Thank you for your incredible example as to how life can be lived.
