Knoweth Thine Owneth

It is terribly important for those of us who bask in the light of education, liberal thought and infinite curiosity, to remind ourselves from time to time , that members of our very own species, with whom we share nearly identical DNA, have Internet access and the ability to post ideas such as the following, in this case, found in the comment section of KSL.com

As posted, I present you the unedited comment of Kurt S.

I wish President Bush could have stayed in our great state forever, because he is the best president in the Universe. He will deliver our great country from the evil scourge of liberalism and from all those who subscribe to its blasphemies. He cleverly thwarts the sinister designs of those members of the heinous mainstream media who would have us question his abilities, intentions, honesty, and even his intelligence. These same traitors would also have us fear our all-wise and omnipotent leader’s decision to spy on Americans, as if he could not be trusted to spy on only those people who deserve it. And so what if he permits and condones the torture of our enemies? Wouldn’t Jesus do exactly the same thing?Terrorists shudder at the mere mention of our great leader’s name. Saddam Hussein, the mastermind and primary sponsor of the September 11 terrorist attacks (don’t let the liberal media try to fool you into believing it was some Osama dude), could elude the president’s long arm of justice for only so long; now he trembles in his cell as his dwindling tribe of al-Qaeda terrorists panic in the last throes of their insurgency. Our wise leader’s move to liberate and democratize Iraq will go down in history as the single most ethical (and beneficial) decision ever made. The resulting military mission was the most successful (and ethical) mission ever accomplished (and it WAS accomplished). When the benefits of the Bush tax cuts begin to gush and surge (not just trickle) down to all Americans within the next month or two even the godless liberals will worship their benefactor.God bless President Bush for getting us, our children, and our grandchildren into debt. That’s what I call vision, with a capital “V”. How else can young people learn about character unless they suffer hardship? And God bless Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and the brave men of Fox News for teaching us the truth and freeing us from the onerous burden of having to actually think or study or analyze or question our ideology. You may disagree with me; after all, it is a free country; but if you do, you are wrong. You are either with us (the righteous and infallible conservatives) or against us (meaning with them – the evil, liberal, anti-American wackos).
May God get his/her ass back down her and save us from our own

Thank You Rocky Anderson!

Please to go ThankYouRockyAnderson.org and leave your thank you to Rocky for expressing our sentiments about the war and this administration.

If you weren’t there, you MUST listen to the speech. It was his best! And the crowd cheering was heard far beyond Utah.

Mark Shurtleff Disappointed Me Today

I have always had an in ordinate amount of respect for Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff. Despite being a Republican, Mark has shown tremendous backbone in supporting progressive causes including equality for the GLTB community, youth programs, education, and a “normal” interpretation of law. Mark is the only Republican I have ever voted for, and I will do it again because “I know” his heart is better than it was today.

But I was surprised and disappointed by his comments today in his speech to the small Pro-Bush crowd at Liberty Park.

After confirming Mayor Rocky Anderson’s right to free speech, he very disingenuously suggested that Rocky’s anti-Iraq war/Bush speech was disrespectful and inappropriate in view of the coincidence with the funeral of a Utah Marine. He also used the word “stupid” to describe Rocky’s decision to speak out about the Bush’s lying us into this war and Rocky’s demand for the truth.
del2.jpg
Attorney General Mark Shurtleff knows better. By calling Rocky’s actions stupid, he is calling me stupid and the THOUSANDS of us who cheered Rocky today for his courage, stupid. Mark knows well that we protest this war BECAUSE we support the troops.
If you disagree with this war, if you disagree with the reasons for which US Marine Adam Galvez died, if you SUPPORT the troops risking their lives in an unjust and illegal war, then Rocky’s speech and words are more appropriate than silence.

We are losing almost TWO soldiers per day in this war. Per Mark Shurtleff’s remarks, we should all just shut up and morn the dead. I personally, can’t think of anything less patriotic.

Mark Shurtleff needs to apologize or Mark Shurtleff needs to announce his support for this war despite the lies. And it is hard not to notice that he did not.

Mark Shurtleff DID NOT announce his support for the war in Iraq because while Mark Shurtleff is a politician, Mark Shurtleff is not stupid.

Mark Shurtleff is between a rock and a hard place…his conscience and Utah.

New Tribune Poll: 45% of Utahns Oppose Democracy

According to previous Salt Lake Tribune polls a majority of Utahns ardently support President Bush and his claims about bringing freedom and democracy to Iraq. It appears however, that they do not support democratic values, at least, here at home. >A poll released Monday by the Salt Lake Tribune showed that a whopping 45% of the 645 Utahns polled feel the protest of Bush’s Iraq War and other policies hurts the United States and helps enemies. The inherent irony of this type of thinking is apparently lost on this bunch of Bushites. That is to say, 45% feel that the principle of free speech, long established as the cornerstone of democratic society, takes a back seat to the authoritarian principle of deference to power. For example, Salt Lake County Republican Party Chairperson, James Evans was quoted in the Tribune article as saying, “We feel it appropriate to send the proper message to the country with respect to Utah residents . . . ” Statements such as this reinforce the government’s dominance over what the Americans think and say publicly. It also lends credence to the false notion that free speech and expressions of dissent do harm to our country and need to be kept out of sight

Similarly, Kirk Jowers blasted Rocky Anderson’s public protest of the President, “He just has an obligation as a host and mayor of this city, and he’s not living up to it . . .”

Jowers claims to be a scholar of Political Science as does the University of Utah where he is Director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics. People of influence, such as Jowers, that tell Utahns they are duty bound to keep quiet and show reverence to authority figures are in fact, the ones that aid our enemies. It is not the dissidents. The S.L. Tribune article of course, conceals the true motives of the statements Mr. Jowers makes. According to Caplin & Drysdale where Jowers is an attorney,  “Mr. Jowers has advised more than 30 Republican congressional candidates and provided legal counsel to George W. Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign on Electoral College issues and in Broward County, Florida during the 2000 election recount controversy.”

Mr. Jowers statements belie the fact that the only reason the United States exists at all is because protesters refused to respect the authority of a King that did not represent them. He seems content to act in the service of the King. Even Tribune reporter, Heather May takes the authoritarian perspective when she writes, “the mayor, already disliked by Utahns outside Salt Lake City, inflames those passions by taking the unusual step of protesting a president.”  At this point the hypocrisy of these statements becomes painfully obvious.

The United States under the management of George W. Bush & Co. claims to be engaged in a worldwide war to stop, “Islamofacism” and “spread democracy throughout the Middle East.” How absurd it is that he and his supporters throughout the country do not actually believe in what they are sending others to kill and die for. For instance, Condoleezza Rice’s State Department operates an official website for promoting “democratic values” to other nations and people. The web site is designed to educate people of the world in the basic principles of a liberal democracy and our American form of government. What it says is quite instructive and apparently needs more application here at home than abroad.

Utah may not be a developing nation in the “3rd World” but appears to be in greater need of education about the basics of a democratic society than foreigners are. So for a little fun let’s review the U.S. State Department’s description of  “Principles of Democracy – Freedom of Speech.” Now bear with me for a moment as we recite some elementary principle of free speech and how it relates to creating and safeguarding (not harming!) democratic societies.

-            “Democracy depends on a literate, knowledgeable citizenry whose access to information enables it to participate as fully as possible in the public life of society and to criticize unwise or tyrannical government officials or policies. Citizens and their elected representatives recognize that democracy depends upon the widest possible access to uncensored ideas, data, and opinions.”

-            “Freedom of Speech and expression, especially about political and other public issues, is the lifeblood of any democracy. Democratic governments do not control the content of most written and verbal speech. Thus democracies are usually filled with many voices expressing different or even contrary ideas and opinions.”
-           “For a free people to govern themselves, they must be free to express themselves – openly, publicly and repeatedly; in speech and writing.
-           “The principle of free speech should be protected by a government’s constitution, preventing the legislative or executive branches of the government from imposing censorship.”
-            “Protests serve as a testing ground for any democracy – thus the right to peaceful assembly is essential and plays an integral part in facilitating the use of free speech. A civil society allows spirited debate among those in deep disagreement over the issues.”

Jowers, Jowers, Jowers? Hatch, Hatch, Hatch? Rumsfeld, Rumsfeld, Rumsfeld?  Guess they were not present this day in American Civics 101. Must’ve been too busy starting wars to, “defend America and promote freedom and democracy.” Or was it, “defend the American People from grave threats to their security?” No, maybe it was to own every last drop of oil on the face of the planet? …nah! So again, the question remains, why are the Bushites in Utah throwing tantrums about supporting our troops and commander in chief to spread freedom and democracy around the globe? Their leaders have already publicly declared that they oppose the fundamental right of free speech, whenever the speech is against them. Free Speech is identified by Condi Rice’s State Department as a basic principle of democracy.  So what gives? What is going to satisfy these folks?
Here is my proposal for a compromise solution to this conflict. Let’s allow the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Islamic Jihad, Hamas and Hezbollah to come and rule Utah in order to bring a quick end to all this disrespect of our ruling elites, like Bush and Cheney. Then we can send Jowers, Evans, Hatch and maybe even Heather May to Afghanistan, Israeli West Bank, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon where they can teach the people how to practice free speech and protest just like Condi’s U.S. State Department says. By the way, please excuse my disrespectful inquiries but perhaps “spreading freedom and democracy” throughout the Middle East will require some practice here at home first.

The Dialogue About the US Support of Israel

The dialogue about the US Support of Israel against Hezbolla is drawing much condemnation from many highly respected academics and experts in foreign policy.

It has been suggested that the US unreserved support of Israel’s actions in Lebanon, has given Iran and Syria more permission than ever to pursue their goals in Iran. It has angered our allies in Europe, and led to comments like, “the lack of day light between Israel’s policies against Lebanon and the US ‘s policy has compromised the US credibility as a mediator in the Middle East process.

Did the IDF fail to distinguish between civilian and civilian targets?

It seems our untempered support for Israel’s pounding entire towns in Lebanon has also threatened Ehud Omert’s ability to lead Israel in the future.

Israel should remember that Americans puplic support for Israel is strong but closer to that of the Europeans, but not as strong as the US Israel support lobbies.  This can hurt Israel in light of the overwhelming disapproval of Bush and his advisors like Wolfowitz, Feith and Cheney.

Some would argue that Olmert shoud have thanked Bush for his support, but backed off just a little bit in “smashing” Hezbollah.

We need to know the truth about what has happened in this war. Did Israel over react because of US support? Have we together violated the laws of war and set back the foundation for peaceful settlement, or have we forsaken proportionality in a conscious strategy to move this conflict beyond diplomacy?

It is clear to us that air supremacy alone could have eliminated Hezbollah rockets. So it looks like Israel went beyond because of US prodding.
We don’t know what to believe.

Help us understand Jacques and Elisha, keeping in mind, everything Bush touches seems to go bad.

What the Terrorists Want

August 24, 2006 – Bruce Schneier

I’d like everyone to take a deep breath and listen for a minute.

The point of terrorism is to cause terror, sometimes to further a political goal and sometimes out of sheer hatred. The people terrorists kill are not the targets; they are collateral damage. And blowing up planes, trains, markets or buses is not the goal; those are just tactics. The real targets of terrorism are the rest of us: the billions of us who are not killed but are terrorized because of the killing. The real point of terrorism is not the act itself, but our reaction to the act.

And we’re doing exactly what the terrorists want.

We’re all a little jumpy after the recent arrest of 23 terror suspects in Great Britain. The men were reportedly plotting a liquid-explosive attack on airplanes, and both the press and politicians have been trumpeting the story ever since.

In truth, it’s doubtful that their plan would have succeeded; chemists have been debunking the idea since it became public. Certainly the suspects were a long way off from trying: None had bought airline tickets, and some didn’t even have passports.

Regardless of the threat, from the would-be bombers’ perspective, the explosives and planes were merely tactics. Their goal was to cause terror, and in that they’ve succeeded.

Imagine for a moment what would have happened if they had blown up 10 planes. There would be canceled flights, chaos at airports, bans on carry-on luggage, world leaders talking tough new security measures, political posturing and all sorts of false alarms as jittery people panicked. To a lesser degree, that’s basically what’s happening right now.

Why Bush Can’t Talk

Why Bush Can’t Talk: It’s not the drugs, and it’s not senility.

by Inland – Thu Aug 24, 2006

Bush’s press conferences and unscripted remarks are so painfully bad, it spurs the question: what is his PROBLEM?

People have remarked that he wasn’t that way when he was the Governor of Texas, and therefore theorize that he has deteriorated due to premature senility or a lifetime of drug use.

I think the reason George Bush stumbles, ends sentences midway through to jump to another thought, rattles off non-sequiturs, and makes up words, is that George Bush is breaking under the strain of lying almost all the time about almost everything.

I think it’s because lying is hard work, and he’s trying to hold several different false scenarios in his head while not blurting out what he’s really being told behind closed doors.

Bush looks like a person stumbling over the easiest things, but in fact, he’s not a person unable to relate simple facts. He’s a person trying hard to NOT relate simple facts. He’s a person trying to avoid the pitfalls of saying what’s on his mind, and trying to keep his stories straight.

As I lawyer, I see people trying to construct false scenarios all the time. But you don’t remember lies the way you remember truth. It’s easier to remember, e.g., how fast you were driving than it is to remember the exact lie you told the police officer about how fast you were driving. People who lie have to put a lot of energy into keeping their lies consistent with each other and, well, consistent with undeniable facts.

My grand theory is that Bush’s entire presidency, from the beginnings of his campaign until now, is based on his taking public stances that at least obscures goals and positions shared secretly. He and his Roves have always accepted that the majority of the country wouldn’t want him if they knew the promises he made to the right wing christians and the rich, if they knew the actual effect of his tax cuts, if they knew the evidence behind environmental damage, and on and on. Now, he’s hiding the entire foreign policy fiasco(s), who is being held by him incognito, who is being spied upon, what he knew before 9/11, and on and on and on.

Drafting 60-year Olds Now?

by theophilus – Wed Aug 23, 2006

My parents live in a gated condo complex in the DC area, and are friendly with the gatehouse guard, a Vietnam vet who served in the Navy Seals and in the Marines. The fellow, who is in his early 60’s, was in special units that had lifetime call-up provisions.

Well, now the Marines have called him up. For combat operations. In Fallujah. So it’s come to this. Our nation is now so desparate for recruits that we’re not only forcing recent enlistees back for another tour, we are now forcing grandfathers back onto the battlefield?

This is what losing nations do when desperate, what happens when military adventures go so bad that all the healthy soldiers are killed. Maybe next we will be sending 14 year-olds and amputees as well? The fellow in question is mostly healthy–he only has a bad back.
And the Marines have apparently told him that if his back worsens, he will be allowed to come home again. How sweet of the Marines. How considerate.

However much idiocy we have further to suffer through before we pull out of Iraq? it seems safe to say that the American all-volunteer army is dead for a generation. Who is going to enlist when they’re told, “Oh, and by the way, we may call you up when you’re about to retire, to kill and be killed for the military adventure fantasies of a future President AWOL”? And these assholes are campaigning on national security? God bless the goddamn GOP.

Behold Inhabitants of The Land of Zion!

Bear witness to the 2nd coming of King George II and his trusty steed Condoleezza Rice. I say 2nd coming as in a sequel of last August 22nd when George W. rallied the VFW convention to his war. He did this in the shadow of the former Salt Lake VA Hospital now a triage clinic thanks to his VA budget cuts. And they booed Rocky at the Convention? Last year it was Rocky and Bush head to head. About 1,500–2,000 amassed at Pioneer Park on a weekday to hear Mayor Anderson call Bush onto the carpet for an illegal war and occupation of Iraq. The national media including ABC News put the spotlight on the Salt Lake City protest in the late August heat of a revived peace movement. Bush it seemed was dogged all of August 2005 from Gold Star Mother, Cindy Sheehan on the doorstep of his vacation ranch in Crawford to the disastrous failure to save the thousands of victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. George must have felt the pain last August as the people most affected by his violent leadership confronted him.

Gold Star mothers like Cindy Sheehan and Celeste Zappala make powerful advocates against Bush’s war not just because their children were killed in it but because they know it was for lies. When Celeste shared her son Sherwood’s story in Salt Lake City on August 22nd last year another mother wept as she listened. Celeste told us how her son was deployed to Iraq with a special unit tasked with locating hidden WMD. An Army National Guard task force going on nothing but hearsay as evidence and not a single threat by Iraq to use alleged weapons against the United States, Sherwood gave his life searching for them. The problem? Celeste understands he didn’t give his life searching for WMD, terrorists or freedom and democracy for that matter. His life was taken away because President Bush lied. Army Mom, Debbie Johnson wept as she heard the truth calmly laid out by Ms. Zappala. It was truly a magical day, a day of reckoning to our national nightmare. On that day, the people of Utah confronted Bush on his foreign war and occupation that still lacks any justification and has no end in sight. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s All About Family Values

Utah likes to talk a lot about “Family Values” – Utah’s strong commitment to family and children is a major reason that we returned to Utah and why we live in Cedar City, because it is a great place to raise kids.

The Hollingshead Family, 2006

In all things that affect Utah’s families, we should be setting the standard for the rest of the nation to follow. We should always do everything we can to help Utah families to be successful.

First of all, I believe we can fully fund education and give teachers what they need to be successful. I also believe we can do it without undue tax burdens. We can give our schools the resources they require without raising taxes. It’s just a matter of choices & priorities coupled with dedication to get it done. If elected to the Utah Senate, I pledge to make public schools the the very best choice for our children, and I promise to do it without undue tax burdens. As a state that values its children, we should be at the top of the list, not at the bottom. Investing in our children is a FAMILY VALUE.

I believe that every person in the state of Utah should have access to basic quality health services at a cost they can afford. A growing number of children in Utah do not get the health care they need because their families do not have insurance. As a state that values its children, we can and we should do better. Affordable health care is not a luxury. Making sure that kids and families get the health services they need is a FAMILY VALUE.

I believe that Utah families deserve a break! The average Utah family will spend $528 on school supplies this year. This is in addition to the many other fees associated with sending a child back to school. To help ease this burden, I support a tax cut like the back-to-school sales tax holiday. A ‘Back-to-School’ sales tax holiday puts real money back into the pockets of Utah families who already contribute so much to Utah’s growing economy.

I support removing the remaining portion of the state sales tax on food. If the sales tax on food were removed, food products would be less expensive and easier to purchase. This means parents would have an easier time feeding their kids. It means that people on a fixed or limited income would be able to stretch their dollars further at the grocery store. In short, it would mean that fewer people in the state of Utah would go without enough to eat-and that is a cause we can all rally behind.

Helping Utah families by providing them with common sense tax breaks – now that’s a FAMILY VALUE!

The families who live in Senate District 28 have a community spirit that is second to none. Our area is brimming with good families who believe in a vision for Utah, and people like you who believe they can make, and are making, a difference.

I believe in UTAH FAMILIES. I will work hard to represent the values and issues that are most important to you, and I will always fight for YOUR family. I do not subscribe to “Petty Partisan Politics” nor do I believe that decisions affecting Southern Utah and our rural communities should be dictated by Wasatch Front politicians. As your Senator, I will listen to your ideas and fight hard to make sure that your voice is heard. I am inspired by what you do, I am energized by what you have to say, and am looking forward to what we can do together for Utah.
