Edward R Murrow Would NOT Approve
Congratulations to KSL Newsradio for winning an Edward R Murrow award for its website.
I find it not just ironic, but disturbing that anything associated with KSL would win an award bearing the name of Edward R. Murrow, a man know for “honesty and integrity in delivering the news†and a “series of TV news reports that helped lead to the censure of Senator Joseph McCarthy.â€
If Murrow were alive today, he would have roundly condemned any news outlet that associated itself with Sean Hannity and he no doubt would have had a huge problem with KSL’s blatant support of an administration that has worked so very hard to censor journalist like Bill Moyers and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
While we’re on the subject, if KSL’s website is so worthy of acclaim why does it not list it’s new NightSide program. I couldn’t find it anywhere except on the actual schedule.
Could it be that comments on its Community Comment Board such as the following, have doomed it?
“STUPID IDEA! Your going to lose your base listeners. The ones who have made you the success you are. Keep Lars Larsen on, or better yet, put Bill O’Reilly back on. Remember what happened when you put that liberal talk show on awhile back. I can’t remember his name but when he went on you lost me and I’m sure many others. Don’t make the mistake again. The young have other stations. We loyal older KSL listeners only have you. Don’t let us down. Thank You, Gary Campbellâ€
That comment seems to be the consensus on the board. I wonder how Edward R. Murrow would feel about news radio stations catering to its audience rather than journalistic ethics.
I’m betting Nightside will be gone before month’s end.
I’d also like to point out that KSL censors it blog for fairly benign criticisms of Bush. Just today an entire set of replies to a comment that referred to Bush as “Chimpy” were removed several hours later. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself.

I’m thinking that Nightside will survive… and their website may just be in the works.

Did it occur to you Cliff that the topic of that thread on KSL was about the guy who killed Destiny Norton. It had NOTHING to do with George Bush.
Always searching for a conspiracy. And if you actually listened to that Nightside show you might actually find them to be quite liberal. I do.

KSL Nightside is great!!! It is a huge improvement over O’Reilly - make that a super huge improvement. The show is liberal (ok, more liberal that one would expect), interesting and informative. Remember, baby steps.

Anon,
Perhaps that post is a little too disconnected.
The censured discussion on the Destiny blog was about the resemblance to the murderer’s smirk to Bush’s smirk. Since both have been characterized as murderers (Bush in particular by a large and resepected international community), I think the discussion was entirely relevant.
Had the smirk resemblance been connected with say Hitler, it would most likely NOT have been censored.
re: your comment - “Always searching for a conspiracy. And if you actually listened to that Nightside show you might actually find them to be quite liberal. I do.”
You misunderstood. I agree NightSide is liberal, and it certainly needs to be if it’s aimed at a younger crowd since 40% of people aged 18-24 have a very negative view of Bush (compared with 32% of adults). That’s why “I’m betting Nightside will be gone before month’s end.”
Finally, your interesting characterization of my underlying motive, “Always searching for a conspiracy” would be better received by surrendering your anonymity in favor of the kind of integrity properly associated with one who has both the courage and class to lend their personal credibility to such opinions.
