Vote Red? But BYU is BLUE!

Larry Daniel and I decided to give them a warm and hearty Iron County Democrats welcome:

Em’s Mormon Assault Vehicle (and some republicans felt assaulted!!)

Attorney General Mark Shurtleff got a kick out of the Equality Utah reference.
THEIR message? Vote Red. Vote Republican. America Needs Utah.
Stops included the Iron County Courthouse (where they had breakfast on the lawn), the Enoch city offices, State Bank of Southern Utah, Southern Utah Univerity, and the Iron County School District Building.
I will be writing several posts about this experience over the next few days, but here are the highlights:
1. Mark Shurtleff greeting us with a big smile at the Iron County Courthouse, when he saw us drive by in the “DANIEL FOR UTAH” mobile.
2. The guy who old us we weren’t allowed to organize a rally on Main Street and accused us of leveling cheap shots at the republicans (example of cheap shot: True Blue Dems love Gov H)
3. The signs we posted all over the place, just to make sure they knew we were there.
4. The College Republicans Rally at SUU and the gal who couldn’t get LaVar to answer her question.
Imagine the big red blus blowing into town and seeing the sign on the left:
“Red? But BYU is Blue!”
Larry and I were just out having some good clean fun. Stay tuned for more.

As a good Aggie, I must submit this for the record.
The current blue that the Provo Center for Cultural Homogenization and Religious Indoctrination (PCCHRI, known to others as BYU) uses was stolen from my USU Aggies. They use Aggie blue. They stole it. Navy Blue has been Aggie blue for more than a century.
Be original Cougs!

As a fellow Aggie, I’m glad for your reminder of BYU’s copycat ways (no pun intended).

Love the “America Needs Utah Blue.” Normally I don’t like think a play on the opposition’s slogan works. This is the exception.

Thanks Richard. The whole thing was just good natured fun. Unfortunately, the only one on the bus that got the joke was UT Attorney General Mark Shurtleff (R). He came over to greet us and said, “The trip was boring until we started seeing all the signs and tried to figure out what they were.” He looked at the signs on the Daniel for Utah mobile and chuckled.
I told him that he was probably the only one who understood the “= Utah loves the AG” (see the photo on the blog) and they were intended as gentle barbs at people on his bus. He said, “You mean LaVar (Christensen - R, running against popular Cong. Jim Matheson - D UT).”
You see, (Utah) HB 148 was a bill borne out of LaVar Christensen’s hate for gay parents that would have destroyed the visitation rights of step-parents and grandparents too. Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman (R) vetoed LaVar’s hateful bill.
In addition, UT Attorney General Shurtleff was given an award last week by Equality Utah for his support of the hate crimes bill sponsored by Utah State Sen. Scott McCoy.
AG Shurtleff thought the sign campaign along their route was good natured fun. Since the rest on the bus thought they were going into a “safe” republican area and aren’t used to any other competing voices, they weren’t too amused.

AG Shurtleff is a true Statesman and a class act all around. His application of the law has been responsible, moderate and guided by principle rather than politics. I have admired his willingness to break ranks with Republican groupthink when his convictions have dictated. I also think he has done a masterful job in working with polygamous communities- respecting individual autonomy but ferreting out some of the problems at the same time. He has built a lot o f trust.
One of the politicians I admire most on any level of government.
