Sour Grapes
Pignanelli & Webb’s article last Sunday was a classic exercise in pernicious, pattycake, pomposity.
The article entitled Who is the real Democrat, Matheson or Rocky? Was in traditional P&W fashion, a series of rhetorical questions.
They and the essence of the answers follow adorned with my glib comments in italics.
1. Is Jim Matheson a real Democrat?
Pignelli said yes. But a more scientific analysis by Pig’s (as he is affectionatly called by friends) colleague Bob Berneck would suggest Rocky is right. Bernick backed up his statement, “by national standards, Utah’s 2nd Congressional District representative is not much of a Democrat.†(I’ll take Matheson any day over another Chris Cannon)
According to VoteMatch Jim Matheson is a moderate conservative well to the right of our beloved (by democrats) Governor Jon Huntsman.
So what is Pignelli’s real agenda? Well, I’d say SOUR GRAPES based on the last sentence in Pig’s answer, “The last time I checked, Rocky was not handed the authority to define a ‘Democrat.’” It seems to me pretty much everyones these days seems to have the authority to define a Democrat.
Webb didn’t answer the question but instead spewed a bunch of gibberish about Nancy Pelosi and “a whole raft of ultra-liberal/leftist.â€
2. Is Rocky a Democrat?
Webb says yes.
Pignelli says no, and proceeds to cram the words “[dictator, personality cult, abusive practices, hypocritical actions and monumental failures]†into one paragraph without a single supporting statement in a venomous attack that can only be described as SOUR GRAPES.
3. Will Rocky’s endorsement of the Brister impact the election?
Webb says, “Would that it were so,†which I don’t even know what that means, but since I am one of the “Avenues wine-and-cheese crowd [that supports Rocky]â€, I would have to say Webb would fit in quite well.
Pignelli says, “Possibly†immediately followed by, “Matheson will winâ€. “Possibly?†If Pig really believes that, he has the political acumen of that one term idiot George “Macacca†Allen or…SOUR GRAPES.
4. Are Anderson and Matheson conspiring to promote each other’s interests?
(Does Webb get to write any of the questions?)
Pignelli: “Rocky’s attack of Matheson…gives the Mayor an opportunity to strut his stuff on the national stage. Such a Machiavellian strategy…†Either Pig is jealous of Rocky’s recent national media attention or its SOUR GRAPES (or both)
Webb responds gratuitously (to Pig for the stupid question) saying, “I wholeheartedly endorse this rumor and move that we all agree to believe it.â€
5. Why is Rocky attacking Matheson and what does he have to gain?
Webb: “Rocky is successfully building a national, even international, reputation as a gadfly willing to go after the establishment on an equal-opportunity basis.†Thank you Webb, now you know why we love Rocky, same reason you love Bush, they “go after the establishment.â€
Pignelli: “Regardless, these antics prove the “Mouth of Fourth South” will say or do anything to promote his narcissistic agenda.†…SOUR GRAPES.
It should be noted at this point for those of you who don’t know, and the rest of us who’ve long forgotten, Rocky kicked Pig’s ass in the last mayoral election, and for good reason.
Pignelli took us all for rubes displaying the most obvious kind of political pandering, tight-rope-walking, policy-mushy, weak-kneed, sell-out campaign the city has ever seen. The only reason the guy calls himself a democrat is Catholic guilt, which also explains his virtual absence in democratic political circles.
Sorry for the hack job. Still looking for contributing authors.

Your post illistrates the problem with the modern Democrat party. The party no longer accepts any other viewpoint that diverges from its rigid leftist dogmas. Democrats have become what they have always accused conservatives of being. If you do not blindly subscribe to the Democrat party line you are unworthy of calling yourself a Democrat. Case in point, Joe Lieberman. He was your Vice Presidential candidate and now he has been drummed out of your party for daring to support the Iraq war. A war that most Democrats in Congress voted for I might add. Now Mayor Rocky Anderson has made himself the arbitor of who is a “true Democrat” and who is not. Congressmen Matheson apparently has not passed the litmus test and therefore must be branded a heritic and bannished as well.
Matheson may not be a far left Democrat but unfortunatly he will still vote to make Nancy Palosi Speaker of the House, and Charles Rengel the house ways and means commitee chair along with reorganizing the entire house leadership under an iron fisted Democrat rule in the unlikely event that Democrats rest control of the House from Republicans this November. So even though Matheson is not worthy in your view to call himself a “true Democrat” he will in fact empower the far lefties in his party. Which is a great reason why you should vote Republican.

At least with a republican vote you do know what you’re getting. There are those among us who do not like what the republicans have been doing the past 30 or so years, and that is not a crime. Yet. Any thinking person can pretty much assume that the Military Industrial Complex will ‘buy’ the Repubs. This purchase is becoming truer of the Dems every day, removing all but the smallest distinction between the parties. Ken, we’re coming to get you, (only not like you think). I does seem that were the Dems more willing to adopt opposition status, they should develop a better focus, clearly state that torture and war, unless absolutely necessary, dishonesty and corruption are not part of the program . Then let the voters decide. One other significant problem for the opposition is that the media, (outside of the internet), are, for the most part, bought-and-paid-for Repub. If you must be attached to one or the other party, what becomes of free thought? Finally, I’ve seen, “Who would Jesus torture?”, around more and more lately. I think it should be, “Who would I torture?” Or “Who would I have tortured in my name and on my dime?”

Caveat Emptor
When Christ returns the wicked will “burn as stubble”. The ACLU will not be able to complain because all thier members will be ashes.
September 30th, 2006 at 3:53 pm
Well, I guess that answers my question. Thanks, Ken. I’ll set up a torture chamber on some island specifically for the ACLU. Give Christ a helping hand. You da man.

Or perhaps you’re talking about nukularizing Iran. Collateral damage won’t be an issue ’cause it’s just Christ coming back off vacation. Been clearin’ brush on the ranch!
September 30th, 2006 at 6:27 pm
Hey Ken,
You better hope to fucking God that He is not a card carrying member of the ACLU. ‘Cause if He is, you and your ilk will join the ash pile you refer, and forego that special planet you might otherwise feel entitled! Think about it, Ken, Jesus would support the ACLU, and so would His Dad. Hell is hot, so you best be buying suntan lotion while you still can!

The photo of Dennis “one of many war criminals” Hastert handing the gavel back to Nancy is welcome and overdue! Thanks, Ken, for putting that image in my mind tonight. BTW, what up with the Repug Foley?

I won’t come to the defence of a pervert just because he’s a Republican. Foley has disgraced himself, his family, his party and his country. Let the chips fall were they may.
September 30th, 2006 at 7:42 pm
Preciate the feedback, Ken. By the by, I think the spelling “defence” as opposed to “defense” went archaic some time ago. In similar fashion, you might want to reconsider your political leanings to the extent those leanings in any way support the current Bush administration.
September 30th, 2006 at 7:58 pm
The chips have allready fallen at the feet of Majority leader Fastert, who may very likely fall in the pile with Abrahamoff, Ney, Duke Cunningham, Delay and the other corrupt GOPers that got so many passes just because they supported this regime. That day of judgement, gonna be sweet indeed. Hell-fire, yes indeed. Bring it on.

Thanks for the spelling correction. I usually run my posts through a spell checker, but I was in a hurry. The problem with spell checkers is they make us lazy.

I would submit that Congressman Matheson could have voted against the USA PATRIOT Act, the anti-consumer bankruptcy bill, the Military Commissions Act and the Electronic Surveillance Modernization Act without being a leftist. I’m old enough to recall when supporting the Constitution, Bill of Rights and equal protection under the law were convervative values.
Since Matheson is ahead by 36 percent, I find it hard to believe the usual excuse of “the GOP made me do it” because of fear of attack ads. As a matter of fact, if I were the Republican candidate I’d run an ad that says, “unlike my opponent, I actually believe in freedom, individual rights and the Constitution.”
