Senate
Webb is apparently ahead about 6000 votes ahead in VA which is GREAT news. We’re waiting on Montana - but for now Tester is ahead of Burns. Right now we have a 49/49 (49 R’s, 47 Dems, 2 independents who caucus with the Dems) split in the Senate with these races yet to be decided but the Dems ahead in both races. Apparently, Webb has declared victory in VA but a recount looks likely.
I’m feeling optimistic - I think Montana will swing into the D column. That leaves VA - Webb is looking good. Here’s the deal: A year ago, Allen was looking good, a major player in immediate future for the Republicans - sort of a smarter, less smarmy George W. Bush. He’s spent the last month fighting for his political life. He’s committed some serious gaffes in the campaign. Allen has probably lost his credibility as a national candidate even if he survives this senate race.

I give Webb leadership points for declaring victory, when some Democrats would have hesitated.

Webb and Tester should just pull a Chimpus: tell the world that they won and don’t back down, at any cost, no matter what the polls or final vote tally say.
Oh how fucking sweet it is. “Bring ‘em on,” Pelosi!

Now that Joe Lieberman has successfully extracted the knife out of his back he should use it against the Democrats that betrayed him. He could be the next Jim Jeffords and deny the Democrats the leadership in the Senate. I am sure the Republicans will offer him plumb committee assignments if he turns. Otherwise he may find it difficult to work with the Democrats that sold him down the river.

The Associated Press declared Democratic challenger Jon Tester the winner in the U.S. Senate race over Republican incumbent Conrad Burns shortly after 10:30 Wednesday morning.
Can anyone say “cake frosting”?
The Repug house of cards continues to fall even further - Rummy just announced he is stepping down!

Ken-
It’s odd that you would call the CT voters in the Democratic primary back-stabbers and betrayers. Are you really saying that getting out and voting for the candidate you think represents your values best is a bad thing to do? You’re being a little hostile to democracy, don’t you think?
Deep authoritarian streaks.
