Our Rocky made the cover of Nation magazine.
Having spent several months as Rocky’s interim communications guy, I witnessed up close and personal the viceral, organized and popular sport of Rocky bashing. I can tell you it looks no different from the inside than the outside for the simple reason that both of our major daily papers love it and facilitate it. John Hughes (D-News Editor) pushed one young reporter so hard it ruined the kid’s career. Revised: And I watched in horror the local media morph into parapazzi at the slightest opportunity to spark a new sensational furor while refusing to write about many of the important things Rocky was doing.
But we noticed and the world noticed, and this national praise and national presence reminds us once again, Salt Lake City is a world class city with a majority progressive community surrounded in part by a hostile tribe grunting in unison against rational progress and thoughtful discourse for fear of being exposed for what they are not.
Over the past seven years, Anderson has transformed the city. While outsiders who know little of the nuances of Utah politics might assume this nerve center for the Church of Latter Day Saints to be a bastion of conservatism, among those who track urban policy trends the city has become synonymous with some of the most creative urban government thinking in the country.
We can count on a jealous republican state legislature to continue to block Rocky at every turn out of a petty jealously for the fact that one out-spoken liberal has brought more benefits to this state then they ever will.
When Anderson proposed a law stating that the city would favor doing business with companies that paid a living wage to their employees, the conservative state legislature did an end run around this by passing a bill prohibiting municipalities from making contract decisions based on such criteria. He is, according to senior staff, often at loggerheads with councilmen, state legislators and the governor. Some go so far as to say that anything he supports, the legislature will oppose.
And don’t count on a responsible local media to play a role in improving our quality of life.
Case in point. the Desert Morning News did not print Professor Firmage’s letter(print version) recently because they endorse his views and believe the community will benefit from hearing his voice, but rather because it is provocative and generates letters to the editor like this, this, and this.
I assure you if the D-News had received any intelligent critiques they would have published those. That only idiots disagree with Professor Firmage or Rocky is no excuse for legitimizing cave-level community discourse but it is par for the course around here at least for the forseeable future.
We need to get the Tribune back in the hands of Jack Gallivan and The McCarthys, and we must elect current Minority Leader Ralph Becker Mayor of SLC.

What I love about this situation with Rocky and his detractors is that it is proof, that progressives really are not inclusive, they are partisan.
Your comments about those opposing Rocky smack of bigotry, and that is something I am well familiar with. You may dislike their opinions but name calling of people directly to define their personage is the telltale of a loser. If you had nay real complaints against those people, calling them names would do exactly what? Make you feel better? I am now going to do what you do, call you directly, a left wing fringe bigot.
I can say that those attacking Rocky are honest about it, you know, that I know, where your true prejudices lie.
I would be happy to explain it all to your progressive friends but if in a fit bigotry and censorship you might ban me. The loss would be devastating. I would be undone.
The gears are starting to turn. Hey check this out, do it your self impeachment.

Cliff, not sure if you saw Heather May’s post in the SL Trib’s “Out of Context” blog. It’s here for your information. http://blogs.sltrib.com/utahpolitics/2006/12/cover-charge-liberal-mag-pays-homage.htm
I also posted your article there to let Heather be aware and hopefully read.

Interesting (and ironic) comments from Glenn. While accusing Cliff of name-calling and bigotry, he gleefully ignores actual letters that are linked that label Firmage as “intellectual[ly] vapid” and a “whacko.” Of course, this is par for the course when such folks are presented with a reasoned opinion that doesn’t square with their willfull ignorance. To give Rocky and his peers any credit for anything is, well, just bad, because, um, they’re dirty, gay-loving hippies who hate the Mormon Church. This script, aided and abetted by consumate idiots like Heather May, is just too good to let reality screw it up.

h/t Shawn
I just received a phone call from Heather essentially reading me the definition of slander without using the word, and I reluctantly agreed to remove a reference to an e-mail exchange we had while I was with Rocky in which I felt sorry for her having to compromise the journalistic ethic that one is taught in journalism.
Perhaps I am wrong. It is entirely possible though unlikely that they did not teach ethics where Heather went to school. It is also possible she doesn’t feel that the expectations of her bosses collide with the idea of unbiased and balanced reporting.
So now I am conflicted. Should I have removed her name from the post above? Should I have caved into her claim that “she was always looking for dirt†is slander? Should I have held myself up to some journalistic standard in this case and refused to remove the offending comment?
I don’t know, but I did. I did it because somewhere deep down inside I have faith in Heather and I feel sorry for her and any journalist put in her position. Ultimately the Salt Lake Trib is controlled by a corporate master as coldly and exclusively interested in profit as any.
On the other hand, maybe Heather really is a conservative. Comments like “Other Gems:†followed by more adoring statements about Rocky not to mention the title “Cover charge? Liberal mag pays homage to Rocky†smack of sarcasm.
What have I done? I could point out a number of what I considered mean-spirited things Heather wrote about me (except I can’t know because the Trib changes the links after a while so they can charge more money.) I could just be naive. Maybe it take a certain coldness or makes you cold to be forced to serve a corporate master in things of the heart?

Shawn, I appreciate your pointing out Heather’s blog post. She got to me before I had a chance to read it and your comments.
I also appreciate your pointing out Glenn’s hypocrisy. Glenn is a shameless attack dog.
If Glenn thinks, “surrounded in part by a hostile tribe grunting in unison against rational progress and thoughtful discourse for fear of being exposed for what they are not†smacks of bigotry, I guess I’d say, takes one to know one.
I though I was very careful place blame where blame belongs and avoid broad weeping generalizations. Not all people surrounding Salt Lake are part of the “hostile tribe grunting in unisonâ€, just as most Spanish speaking Utahns are not illegal, but you would never get that from reading Glenn’s comment either.
Glenn knows well I have no problem calling a bigot a bigot. I have done it many times on this blog. Chris Cannon comes immediately to mind. But how one arrives at bigot from “grunting in unison against rational progress and thoughtful discourse for fear of being exposed for what they are not”, I cannot say. Only Glenn knows how Glenn’s mind works or which dictionary he’s using.

When one cries “slander” when criticized, it’s usually an indication that the criticism is valid and should therefore be silenced. I am sure there are plenty of lawyers who would tell you that it’s laughable to say that a REPORTER is “looking for dirt” is libel/slander. Imagine being sued for calling a lawyer an “ambulance chaser” or for calling a real estate agent a “dirt pimp.”
The fact of the matter is that the majority of the Trib’s readership sympathizes with the anti-Rocky crowd, which of course has grown larger and more virulent due to Heather May’s reporting. Portraying the Mayor as a liberal moonbat who is hostile to the Mormon Church will always sell more papers than accurate, un-biased reporting. May, at least subconciously, knows this and it’s no surprise that she will lash out when her journalistic ethics are justifiably questioned.

There is no name hypocrisy from me, I was merely pointing out that all in all, Cliff, Rocky and their detractors all play by the rule. I didn’t read the letters, the content of cliffs language was enough to inspire the post about his hypocrisy. I have heard all this stuff about rockys detractors before rockys booze buying imbroglio.
In the calculus of defending Rocky, any chance that the charges against for buying drinks with taxpayer money are true? If so, it is only fitting that he is excoriated. God knows what else is going on.

And to think that for some being placed on the cover of the Nation is a mark of shame. It goes to show how wide the gulf is between the polarized elements of our society. We are going through some major split, that I believe will soon become irremediable if left to fedter, and there will be movements for elements of of Country to be separate if this continues. They would be within their rights as stated by the Constitution as the officers are corrupted.
If the government and elements of the US populace wish to ignore Constitutional Law, immigration law, fiscal law, trade law, international law, and on and on. Many of us would not be upset to be cleaved from such a virtueless burden.

Glenn,
Rocky was exonerated long ago for the accusation of buying drinks on taxpayer money. To repeat the felicitous charge only speaks to your laziness and carelessness.
You seem to have an opinion on everything. Is there subject on which you are not informed enough to level charges of impropriety?
Pray tell us Glenn, thrower of bombs, on which subject is your information lacking?
#10 by glenn - December 18th, 2006 at 19:27
Stick to the issues and answer the questions. The lack of information can be proven by you for all to see.
If he wasn’t guilty why did he pay back the money?
#11 by Cliff - December 18th, 2006 at 20:37
You can answer that question yourself Glenn if you try, OR you can flail about in your pathological personal attacks on anyone to the right of anarchist.
I don’t need to defend Rocky to you. You do not live here. You have never voted in this country, you pay no taxes and you offer no solutions but instead condem and recommend punishment for those that do.
#12 by glenn - December 22nd, 2006 at 11:55
I voted last election. I pay the taxes I owe, and daily pay the pile on everything sold I buy.
I attack you becasue I can. C’mon Cliff attacking you is FUN.
