Oh m’gosh - Not sure how I got on THIS list

This appeared in my email box today as part of a mass emailing (portions of it are omitted):

Dear Friends,

Protect Minors from Gay Clubs in Schools

The Utah legislature is taking up a bill about gay clubs in schools. Tomorrow, Tuesday, January, 23, 2006, the Utah House Education committee will be meeting to consider HB0236 which amends the Utah law on student clubs. The committee meets at 8:00 a.m. in room W135, West Office Building, State Capitol Complex. The bill is complex but it is hoped that it will help protect our high school students from sexual activism in schools. The pro-gay side will be out in force, so those of us who believe in traditional values and GodÂ’s laws should support this piece of legislation. We will be there, joining our ally Gayle Ruzika from the Utah Eagle Forum, and others who stand for the right. If you can make it, please attend. There may be time to make comments to the committee. Legislators are our representatives and need to know our views.

I have never heard of this group nor did I sign up for their email list. Furthermore, aside from the issue of unsolicited email, I am opposed to a bill preventing “gay clubs in school”.

I looked up the website and found this:

Standard of Liberty is an LDS-oriented educational corporation which exists to raise awareness of radical movements overrunning America’s Christian-moral-cultural life and to inspire the public will, families, and individuals to counteract these trends.

Please note: Our view of homosexuality and the like does not include rejection or condemnation of individuals, nor is it about acceptance and praise for unnatural and unhealthy sexual identification and behaviors. We promote hope and help in preventing, understanding, and overcoming sexual problems.

I respect the rights of people to say what they need to say and voice there opinion. I am all for protecting children - MY OWN CHILDREN–from the things I feel they need to be protected. I do not believe in instilling my beliefs on other people because I do not feel that my beliefs are the only beliefs.

While we are talking about instilling morals on people, I wish that the same people who insist that our children should be “protected” from things like homosexuality would scream about all the military ads that our children are subjected to in the media. Isn’t there a saying - “Thou shalt not kill”?

These are the kind of people that really hurt the church.

You should see their website. I can think of more than a few LDS friends who would shutter to see the claims these people make on behalf of the church.

Not only are Stephen and Janice Graham bigots, they are self-serving opportunist clearly trying to push their publishing company Tidal Wave (of bigotry).

Although I agree with some of what they say on their site, it really is a touchy subject when people starting ‘quoting prophets’ to suit their personal whims.

I do not think that LDS church leaders’ would personally prefer to ban gay-straight clubs in the public schools. I don’t, because I imagine it would be a forum where those who are separated by a great ideological divide could come to understand each other more clearly. If in such clubs, however, homosexuals flaunt their homosexuality or recruit others to their way of life, I would find that as wrong as a heterosexual club promoting their brand of promiscuity.

I have associated in the past with the Eagle Forum, and I agree with much of what they believe. But I DO NOT support their combative stance. I expressed this sentiment to the Eagle Forum leadership a few years ago, but got no response. Gayle Ruzicka seems to me to have the best conceptual interest of her fellow beings at heart, but I’m not sure it comes out that way in practice. The wording in the Graham’s letter regarding Ruzicka further complicates the issue by seeming to be an attempt to elevate her status to something akin to nobility.

I hesitate to applaud the delicacy of your admonition less the malignancy of my reputation befoul the rectitude or your estimation.
