“Plantation Mentality” Working Perfectly
Bill Moyers spoke very deliberately about the “plantation mentality” in his recent speech; a speech which would have gotten him hauled up before the House Unamericans Activity Committee in an earlier time.
But he is right, sadly. Its more than a mentality though, its a strategy that keeps national wealth (and power) in the hands of the most privileged in this country.
This video proves how well its working.
Now I know these videos are easy to do and some people were able to answer the questions…right?

Those that serve get the shaft under bush. I wonder if Diane is proud of this in our pres. or wonders if she should be so loyal.

I am very familiar with this story and have written to President Bush and my Senators and Congressman regarding border agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean. I have been very disappointed with the President’s handling of this case in particular and the border situation in general.
However, I fail to see what it has to do with the post or the video. The video is appalling, but people are lazy. I’ve seen this schtick on Jay Leno, etc., many times. Further, you could slant it any way you like. This doesn’t prove that Bush supporters are ignorant and blindly following his every whim. It proves that stupid people come in every stripe. I know people who are registered Republican, registered Democrats and non-voters who would fail to answer those questions.
The video is, to quote Shakespeare “…a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.” –Macbeth, Act V, Scene V …
But, Glenn, thanks for thinking of me!

Hey Diane,
It’s not about stupid or smart, its about education. Why would you call these people stupid?
January 26th, 2007 at 11:17 pm
The scariest part was at the end of the video when they asked if people would support the president going to war against Kyrgyzstan, a place most of them had never heard of. I wonder how many people there are (I suspect more than a few) who are like the lady who said “Well, I support President Bush, so…yes.”
January 27th, 2007 at 5:53 am
Because most of those people make no effort to better themselves. I don’t know about Kyrgyzstan because of school. I know about it because I made a point of continuing to educate myself, just like most people who are out here in political blogs. Those people who can’t answer those questions are lazy and stupid. They could tell you every contestant on American Idol. I’m not saying you should know every one of those answers, but for God’s sake, to not be able to recognize Australia when it’s mislabeled?!?!? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! I would have bopped my sons on the head if they missed that one. I’m not saying they have to throw the TV out, just flip the channel to the History Channel or even the Discovery Channel once in a while. Then take a break and read a book.
Frank - I think you are right about the last lady not being alone in her sentiment. However, I will cheerfully count her vote for the Republicans, lol. Just like the Dems happily collected my stupid sister-in-law’s vote when she voted for Deval because Kerry Healey seemed “snooty”. She was quite proud to admit that she didn’t know his platform or hers, just didn’t like the look of her. I’m sure that lady in Texas has a cousin or brother-in-law who tears his hair out every time she talks politics and casually admits she hasn’t read a paper in years, she just “goes with her gut”.

Diane, my point is that this pres is just beyond belief. If he can’t get the border thing right, then we have little chance of anything going right to conclusion with him as decider. One would have expected better results by accident. You know, blind chickens, kernels of corn and all.
The people in the video elected bush, or they tried to elect kerry, they be boobs. We in trouble.
Where in Mass is it 9 degrees? I grew up on the headwaters of the Deerfield,, up in Vermont.
My buddy is drawing up articles of impeachment for bush(West Dover), for the upcoming town meeting day. Fish in a barrel, another town in Vermont votes at the local level to can bush. Say what you will, that is democracy. I hope it catches. HNe is the JOP, and a town committee member. Fun, fun. The crux of the charges is willful lying under the Big Top(a perjury), our pres is to be judged by a jury of his peers.
All those in favor? AYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEE!!!!

Diane,
I think its great you are so pleased with yourself (not to mention your mothering techniques).
The next step is to figure out how you can contribute to a community such that more people are as intellectually curious so you won’t need to call people stupid.
Stupid is only bad when one is also uninformed AND expresses an unsolicited opinion.

I have to agree with Diane. I also add that most of those people were not “educated” while President Bush’s administration has been in the White House. You cannot possibly blame his administration for the ignorance shown. I think that you must blame both parties. I think that if parents took more of an interest in the education of their children that there would not be nearly as much ignorance. Mostly I blame the lazy individuals.
I have heard many similar clips in which liberal people sound just as uneducated. As was mentioned earlier Jay Leno does his man on the street segments regularly.
I know several liberal and conservative leaning people that would answer similarly.

LOL Philip, get over yourself! Bopping is just a turn of phrase, no actual children were harmed in commenting of this blog.
Seriously, where do you get off assuming that I *don’t* already contribute in my community. Because I’m a Republican?
Cassandra - All of Mass is in a deep freeze this week. It’s been brutal. This morning at 0623 I couldn’t gas up the car because the pumps at the station were frozen. As far as the border situation, I agree (and said so above) that it’s being handled poorly. No one agrees with their guy all the time, cripes.
January 27th, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Diane,
Was that LOL nervous laughter because I hit the nail on the head?
I believe you misunderstood my comment. I wasn’t talking about volunteer community work, I was talking about a but a rage against a machine in which you are a compliant widget.
January 27th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
Well its about g damned time Mass froze up, it’s freaking almost February. Don’t worry, at this rate there are only 4 months of winter left!
I love my home, but don’t miss the winters. Try another gas station, for good, if their pumps are frozen now, it is because their gas is full of WATER. Gas does not freeze.
Yes, I have this trouble with bush, you cannot conduct a ‘War on Terror” and get any intelligent Americans to believe in it, with the borders, north and south, in the ridiculously open position we have found them since 911.
The effort is a crock, sealing the border is so doable, and will give us far more security than messing around in Iraq.
January 28th, 2007 at 6:43 am
Philip - No nervous laughter - just comtempt. Go back and readyour first comment, it’s needlessly insulting. How does insulting me advance the dialogue? Is that how you hope to get people to see your side? As far as ” a rage against a machine”, when someone says that stuff in Massachusetts they usually just want more money in taxes.
Cassandra - Needing another gas station was my first thought. There was another woman at the gas station and you should have seen the look on her face when I explained about the water in the gas, lol.
Also, I completely agree that sealing the borders is doable. It’s very frustrating.
January 28th, 2007 at 8:47 am
Frustrating? I’m going with criminal. The concept that we are “fighting them in Iraq so the won’t come here” is laughable.
If they had any interest in that, coming here,”terrists” could simply disguise themselves as migrant workers and walk across the border.
Go to work, pick some crops, make diabolical plans. Instead they are staying and trying to get us out of Iraq. The incongruent nature of these two simultaneous events, a foreign occupation, and barn door open borders can only be believed, in my opinion, by idiots. General statement, not personal.
Some say they have. If true, this makes bushs’ stance criminal to me, or there are no terrorists. It cannot be both ways, except to the brainwashed. His sworn duty is to defend and uphold the Laws of this country, he is not in any way doing this, in fact, he is pissing people off with his “decisions”, to the extent we can expect them(enemies) to come now and do what we fear. I would.
So, in this great terrible danger, what is it bush knows, that we do not, that keeps him from militarizing the border? Could it be there is nothing to fear? Or bush is just a simpleton idiot, like many say? A or B, it has to be one or the other. Unless of course Diane, you have a 3rd reason that makes any sense.
Please advise.
