Openly Gay in the Military

Back in the day, during the first Gulf War under the First George Bush, I was a student at Grinnell College.  At the time, a petition was being passed around campus to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.  I signed the petition but I remain conflicted.

The concept that being gay is incompatible with military service is demonstrably and patently false.  Bravery, courage, steadfastness, and loyalty to one’s comrades and unit are traits found in all persons.  Those traits are not the sole province of the heterosexual.  To be gay does not in any way reduce one’s patriotism, one’s ability to march, to take orders, to shoot people and blow things up.  I don’t remember who said it, but being in battle doesn’t require being straight only shooting straight.

In light of some recent revelations that women in the US military are experiencing sexual abuse, assault and rape at the hands of their colleagues, I wonder if the fear (some) straight men have of gay men in the military is being treated the way they treat women.

    Openly Gay in the military.

The things possible in the barracks now, just like Spartans in that 300 movie. They weren’t gay were they? Oh baby, Spartans were as Gay as a Parade.

    Bring on the boy nubiles!!!

“Addicted to buggery” it is said of Spartans.

All cultures fall, gay based ones just a bit faster. Sparta became a footnote to Athens, which became Romes’ footnote, and after it fagified, became a footnote to the Barbarians, which became Germany, which fell to the homo hitler. Pretty interesting really.
