The wikipedia article does not conclude a definitive explanation though I assume you took it as such.
If crop circles are man made, it would be very easy to prove and even easier for YOU to SHOW me.
Some of the circles are so complex, it would takes days just to lay out a pattern with the level of exactness and symmetry we see in the more complex ones. To date, no one has even been able to do that with chalk in a parking lot, let alone demonstrate how it can be executed over night.
Really, lets just apply commonsense here.
It is particularly interesting that there has never been a report or evidence of a mistake or even a partially finished one.
It IS however, utterly predictable that some people would attempt to take credit for the effort isn’t it?
The Wikipedia article is “The neutrality of this article is disputed”
While you may call me a conspiracy theorist, you might also, in your humility, consider the possibility that I am simply open-minded and curious and wide open to any evidence that would lay to rest this little/big issue.
I should warn you, I have done some very serious research into this after assuming for years that these are man made. You see, I happened to meet a man recently, here in SLC who owns 1000 acreas outside of Stone Hedge who happens to be a scientist/engineer (formerly with Rockwell) and owns a helicopter and has personally conducted very careful measurements of electromagnetic fields in and around fresh circles with state of the art equipment while hovering over them. He is no freak and has no agenda. But he has confirmed to his own satisfaction that there are very significant and consistent magnetic anomalies in crop circles. Hence, my recent investigation.
I got news for ya. They are not man-made and NO ONE has EVER demonstrated an ability, before witnesses, to create anything close to what we see in the photos.
Surely you agree that were it possible, and had it been proven, you would be able to point that out to me?
I do appreciate any LIGHT you can shine on this subject.
I suppose that you’ll say that this http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,292236,00.html was done by aliens also, even though the artist who did it has clearly said he did it and his reasons for doing so.

It looks like there has been a sharp dropoff in numbers of crop circles after 2004. I haven’t seen an explanation for this. I wonder why the vast majority appear in the UK and other English-speaking countries.
The designs don’t look particularly alien to me, so on that basis alone I would rule out extraterrestrial activity (I could cite other reasons not having to do with crop circles per se). They are an interesting phenomenon.
Sorry . . . did I hit a nerve? I certainly wasn’t trying to. Did you see the snarky wink at the end of my comment? The conspiracy theory comment was just a joke, nothing more.
The wikipedia article does not conclude a definitive explanation though I assume you took it as such.

You didn’t ask for a definitive answer, you asked for any ideas. I think the wiki article is pretty clear and well-sourced in saying that all current evidence points to human creation of crop circles. It mentions alternate theories, but none of these theories have any supporting evidence. Do you? Have you seen crop circles being made by anything other than humans?
Some of the circles are so complex, it would takes days just to lay out a pattern with the level of exactness and symmetry we see in the more complex ones. To date, no one has even been able to do that with chalk in a parking lot, let alone demonstrate how it can be executed over night.

Yes. But just because one human wishes to take credit for the work of another human who wishes to remain anonymous that doesn’t mean the work isn’t human created. Common sense . . . .
Here’re the guys who claim to have made them and THEY have been written off as liars.

In 1991 a unique crop formation appeared in a Cambridgeshire field. Called the Mandelbrot Set, it turned the whole enigma on its head.
Based on a set of geometrical patterns discovered by mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, it was so complex it reinforced the belief it couldn’t have been made by human hand.
Inside Out decided to see if it was possible to recreate the Mandelbrot Set in a field of crops in Norfolk at night with no lights. And with the farmer’s permission, of course.
Circle makers John Lundberg and Rob Irving took up the challenge.
In just over four hours and in the pouring rain, John and Rob achieved the impossible: a complex structure several hundred feet deep in the wheat.
Update: I didn’t see the first of your three consecutive comments until after I wrote the below. In response to your question, I should have linked this programme.
I thought the pictures alone would inspire some investigation due to the simple assumption (mine), that these incredible designs, in the absence of clear recorded proof that they are human made, and in light of the overwhelming attention and unexplainable characteristics, are a phenomena.
It never occurred to me that one would simply hit a wiki article and be satisfied. Watch the “Truth Behind Crop Circles” and please accept my apologies for the aggressive response below.
The great thing about the web, is that one can practise the art of investigation in a radically condensed time period than would be required pre-Internet.
But the old axioms remain true. To approach the truth, one must look at the evidence and then find hypothesis that fit. On the other hand, one can easily argue a pre-conceived position/hypothesis by finding evidence to support a hypothesis.
The latter approach is of course, unscientific and corrupt. Before the Internet, such tactics are were often left unchallenged.
Thankfully, this is no longer the case and today, one is able to detect such defective arguments with relative ease, as I have done in this case.
The Inside Out segment is seriously lacking (as is the NIST report -Richard) and sufficient only for one who WANTS to accept its conclusions.
In a previous comment, I suggested to you that so far no humans had created “anything close to what we see in the photos.”
I should have been more specific. To date, no humans have managed to created a crop circle of the complexity and geometric PERFECTION (under the conditions) that we see in very many formations.
The Inside Out piece failed to pass the most obvious test — a simple test, easier, demonstrable - and one that any serious researcher would require in order to reach the conclusion you have. I wonder of in your zeal to explain crop circles, or debunk the supernatural implications, you have lowered your standard of evidence, or if you simply don’t care to employ those basic tests due to an emotional investment in being right.
I beg you not be to be offended by this as I appreciate YOU. But lets be honest, The Inside Out piece could have easily put the whole thing to rest by simply producing an aerial shot of the Lundgerg attempt overlaid by a geometric grid which would have verified the geometric perfection we see in other designs.
That they left that out should have raised some pretty big red flags for you, as it did me. I had in fact seen that video before, and was truly let down at the end when it became obvious, that they were not going to “seal the deal”….like this.
No hoaxed crop circle has ever produced the singlemost characteristic associated with the genuine phenomenon: plants whose stems are bent, not broken. Other anomalies include alteration in the crystalline structure of the plants themselves, also unfakable, and alterations of the local electromagnetic field There is the ability of the plants to grow after being laid
Look Don, I’m not trying to prove anything here. I am simply struck by the fact that despite ALL attempts, no one has been able to debunk this phenomena to my satisfaction, or anyone of high repute.
Sure, there is lots of peripheral noise out there, and the predictable media hounds and other freaks, and you have to weed through that shit as I have. But it does not require a trained scientists to evaluate the evidence and understand the very low standard required to demonstrate a human capacity to reproduce this phenomena.
Understand that I feel an obligation to OneUtah and its wonderful authors to have OneUtah become a permanent and historical record of the highest standard of intelligent discourse, dissemination, and discovery in these times, and as such, cannot let corrupt conclusions go unchallenged.
So I would ask you to raise your own standard just a little bit so as to avoid forcing me to do the work for you (Richard, this goes for you too), as I am very busy person and liable at some point to tire of doing the basic work you could have done yourself.
So I have several choices;
1. I can delete unsound, unresearched, and bogus conclusions
2. Let them stand and therefore allow OneUtah to deteriorate as a reliable source of intelligent discussion.
3. Deal with it by spending and inordinate amount of time disabusing lazy work by anonymous posters.
4. Or stop posting about divisive subjects.
Don, I hope you will continue to engage here and help me establish OneUtah as a higher standard of discussion and argument which will at the very least become a reasonably reliable reflection of intelligent debate.**
Pretty funny Richard, my terminally “Earth bound” friend.
Should you momentarily suspend your classically human arrogance, and consider for a moment that neither you nor I are even remotely close to “intelligent” within the context of this world let alone the universe, we are suddenly free to acknowledge our terminally primitive minds and instincts, selected of necessity, and rise to the challenge presented by the gift of wonder.
Cliff– If you want a serious answer, as you know there are whole books written about the chances of intelligent life in the universe (possibly even on planet Earth). Given the sheer number of planets, it’s a virtual certainty. But outer space is a really big place and our planet is located in an out-of-the-way part of the galaxy. I doubt anybody else knows about us.
Richard - where exactly would we need to be so that we’re not out-of-the-way? Is there a particular portion of the galaxy that is more well-traveled than others? ;-)
Some say we are like their celestial vegetable garden. Why do some people garden?
It could be no other reason than that we are interesting, i.e curiosity.
Keep in mind, there is a huge volume of radar and visual evidence that UFO travel in excess of 15,000 mph and it is supposed that they can exceed the speed of light. If that is true, it is little bother to come here from far away.
Why do we bother to travel to other planets?
If you are uninitiated in this field (as I was only months ago) I recommend starting with a YouTube search on UFO. Then ask yourself why so many would bother to fake the THOUSANDS of videos.

If aliens do exist (and I have no reason to believe otherwise), and they care, they would like to help us prevent human extinction and therefore need to find a away to help us.
But first they must disclose their presence without scaring the shit out of us.
I think crop circles are a clever and beautiful way of sending a message that they are here and non-threatening and that they have a sense of humor.
People, including scientist, who study this, believe they can offer us free energy which would explain why the gov’t works so hard to prevent disclosure.
Free energy means the total destruction of the carbon-based energy economy which constitutes almost 25% of the world economy. Midas Mufflers would be out of business too.
That is a great site (if you have broadband access). It seems we’re a mere 28,000 light years from the galactic center. You could get there in just 18 years at warp factor 9, which is about as fast as the Enterprise can boldly go.
Here is an explanation that involves humans. It has been stated that these circles could be created by radiation that is being directed and emitted from space, by an intelligence…agency? Our government has all the satellites to do such a thing in secrecy, likely with some technology not generally known to the public. UFOS can simply be our own government playing with new technology they have invented.
Onward. If, as Von Braun said, that all war is based on false threats in order to get the public to agree to their own killing and fleecing…, and his statements on the final threat being “extraterrestrial”, to have the elite realize their goal of controlling all of humanity, then their creating crop circles would go a long way in setting the stage for an exterrestrial invasion, that Von Braun claimed would be utterly bogus.
Since the crop circles have “convinced” many that ET does exist, well it would seem that the plan is working. When the bogus invasion comes, the people will believe.
No doubt about it, it’s comforting to believe that aliens are trying to bring a message of hope to us poor humans. It was a great theme in that wonderful science fiction film “The Day The Earth Stood Still.”
If pranksters are doing this, there’s no doubt they have reached a whole new level of sophistication and dedication.
“The Day The Earth Stood Still” (1951) is a sci-fi classic. It’s also a metaphor for Christianity (Klaatu calls himself “Mr. Carpenter” and brings a message of peace).
Read the book, The Day after Roswell, by Col. Corso. Deceased now, he claimed to be the head of a program to introduce the technology reverse engineered and integrated into many of corporate Americas’ companies from the downed alien craft that was brought down, it is believed, by the powerful military radars that were tracking it, as it observed the White Sands testing grounds and other military facilities in the area.
Even if you don’t believe a word of it, the book is as good, if not better, than dedicated science fiction.
I never thought of that. Klaatu did seem like a very wise man. Maybe he can came here and have a beer or a wine with Bush someday and they can figure things out together.
I’ll bet that movie was an inspiration for many of the great television series of the 60’s like “The Twilight Zone” and “The Outer Limits.” Very thought provoking and important shows!
Maybe we can harness the energy produced when Republicans pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Except many of them are sitting around collecting their stock dividends these days.

OK, I decided to learn whatever the Internets could tell me about crop circles.
A look at the “definitive” International Crop Circle Database gives the following worldwide totals:
2007 - 54 (so far)
2006 - 84
2005 - 79
2004 - 157
2003 - 139
2002 - 154
2001 - 102
2000 - 134
1999 - 150
It looks like there has been a sharp dropoff in numbers of crop circles after 2004. I haven’t seen an explanation for this. I wonder why the vast majority appear in the UK and other English-speaking countries.

Is there any consensus on how much longer the ETs are going to wait before they give us the free energy?

Richard:
I never thought of that. Klaatu did seem like a very wise man. Maybe he can came here and have a beer or a wine with Bush someday and they can figure things out together.
I’ll bet that movie was an inspiration for many of the great television series of the 60’s like “The Twilight Zone” and “The Outer Limits.” Very thought provoking and important shows!

Carrie:
Maybe we can harness the energy produced when Republicans pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Except many of them are sitting around collecting their stock dividends these days.
