- Statement to this website 8/27/07: “The 9/11 tragedy is the most successful and most perverse publicity stunt in the history of public relations. I arrive at this conclusion largely as the result of the research and clear writing by David Ray Griffin in his fabulous books about 9/11. I first met him when he was a speaker at a scholarly conference unrelated to 9/11. He immediately impressed me as a brilliant, outstanding philosopher - theologian - author, a Whiteheadian scholar motivated by an intense curiosity to know everything possible about the world. On the plane home and for the next two days I did little else but read Griffin’s first book about 9/11, The New Pearl Harbor. From there I went on to read his even more disturbing account of the bogus 9/11 Commission Report, The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions, which provides overwhelming evidence that the official story is contradictory, incomplete, and unbelievable. It is clear to me that David Ray Griffin and his fellow critics are correct: the 9/11 “new Pearl Harbor” was planned in astonishing detail and carried out through the efforts of a sophisticated and large network of operatives. It was more complex and far more successful than the Allende assassination, the US bombing of our own ship the “Maine” that began the Spanish-American war (and brought us Guam, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines), the Reichstag fire that was used to justify the suspension of most civil liberties in Germany in the 1930’s, and even Operation Himmler, which was used by Germany to justify the invasion of Poland, which started World War II. Whoever is responsible for bringing to grizzly fruition this new false-flag operation, which has been used to justify the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as unprecedented assaults on research, education, and civil liberties, must be perversely proud of their efficient handiwork. Certainly, 19 young Arab men and a man in a cave 7,000 miles away, no matter the level of their anger, could not have masterminded and carried out 9/11: the most effective television commercial in the history of Western civilization. I suggest that those of us aware and concerned demand that the glaringly erroneous official account of 9/11 be dismissed as a fraud and a new, thorough, and impartial investigation be undertaken.”

You forgot to mention that Dr. Lynn Margulis is also one of this country’s most prominent believers in UFOs. IMHO the 9/11 attacks cannot in good conscience be described by anyone as a “publicity stunt” or a “television commercial.” There is nothing “glaringly erroneous” about the 9/11 commission report nor is it fair to characterize that report as an “official account of 9/11″ or a “fraud.”
Dr. Margulis undoubtedly knows bioscience, but I happen to know quite a bit of history and foreign affairs– enough to say the “false flag” hypothesis for the events of September 11, 2001 is completely untenable based on the known facts. It’s too late at night to untangle all the twisted logic above, but…
The day after the Maine was sunk in Havana harbor, Assistant Secretary to the Navy Theodore Roosevelt stated that “we shall never find out definitely†the cause of the disaster. He was probably right. Four separate investigations have brought forth two plausible theories: (1) the Maine was sunk by a Spanish mine or (2) spontaneous combustion in the coal bunkers (a common occurrence in Navy ships back then) triggered an explosion in the forward six-inch ammunition magazines.
Admiral Hyman G. Rickover wrote a book detailing the accident hypothesis. But a theologian and a biologist just blithely assume “false flag” is the only explanation. Hah. I note the website you linked to has no historians listed.

Richard, You do realize you’ve responded by impugning the integrity of a National Medal of Science winner (a fairly desperate tactic, often used by the uninformed) while at the same time claiming your personal expertise on the subject - “I happen to know quite a bit of history and foreign affairs”
Thats funny. What did you say is your degree?
It is painfully obvious, you are more interested in defending your own limited knowledge than doing you own honest investigation. That doesn’t make you a bad person, but also does not exemplify a high level of integrity.
Can you admit that Dr. Lynn (you know, one of the most respected living scientist, has looked a bit more deeply at this subject than you have (by your own admission)?
Have you read any of Griffin’s books?
BTW: In addition to the 85% of people who “believe in UFOs” a significant number of scientists, astronauts, political and military people do as well. I’m not sure how that fact discounts Dr. Lynn’s credibility.
I don’t imagine this will be the first time you’ve heard this so here goes; Rich, you are one stubborn man, but I love you.

Cliff, what can I tell you, I’m not a rocket scientist but I’ve earned a B.A. in History at Georgetown University and a B.S. in Geography at the University of Utah. I’m educated enough to know it’s wrong and more than a little flaky to describe the 9/11 attacks as a “publicity stunt” or a “television commercial.” I’m not impugning anyone’s integrity by disagreeing with their opinion, am I?
In my experience, common sense and logic are sometimes abandoned by experts venturing outside their narrow specialties. Dr. Margulis is 69 years old, and she can be forgiven for being mistaken in the statement you quote above. Being a great scientist doesn’t mean you can never be wrong, especially when you don’t know what you’re talking about! The late Linus Pauling was one of America’s best scientists, a Nobel Prize winner, and he frequently made no sense at all when addressing subjects outside his expertise.
You say 85 percent of people believe in UFOs? Cite your source please. Only 58 percent of Americans are certain God exists, according to the Harris Poll.
No, I have not read David Ray Griffin’s books, why should I? He claims without a shred of evidence that there were air defense missiles at the Pentagon on 9/11. He claims the phone calls to their own family members by the doomed passengers on United Flight 93 were faked by the government. And how’s this for logic:

Richard, funny how an accident ultimately led to to the American usurpation of the holdings of the Spanish empire, something that fit very well into Manifest Destiny and then the Monroe Doctrine. Yeah, we as a nation are blessed by god for these events, and we sure are damn lucky as is the world, that we are here to take the reigns. It is divinely inspired.
Like settlers moving west, because as their priests told them, “rain follows the plow”. God is watching our efforts, should we worry yet?

On the Maine, “we shall never find out definitely†said the Asst Sec of the Navy.
Our current Sec of State, “No one could ever have anticipated Terrorists flying planes into our buildings”. Or something like that, though warnings to us from allies are numerous.
It all sounds very familiar, or maybe I am just experiencing deja vu.

Bush came into office with a warning from a study the Clinton administration did saying that Bin Laden was the biggest terrorist threat facing the country. Richard Clark, who was still there as the terrorist chief in the cabinet repeatedly told them to get their buts in gear and told to go play somewhere and leave us alone.
Cheney put himself in charge of the terrorist operations and DID NOTHING for almost a year after “taking” office.
Lee Hamilton, co-chair of the 911 commission, said “he hadn’t heard of it” when asked if he had read David Ray Griffin’s book about 911 and that was after the commission disbanded. They used a tact used often to fool us dumb Americans. Put ONE REALLY BIG NUGGET out there, (that would be Rice’s admission she had a memo that said “Bin Laden to attack using airplanes”, (or something to that effect), and did nothing.
One big nugget exposed, and EVERYTHING ELSE ignored. Why do we let them, (the media), keep doing this to us!

By the way, I wouldn’t have known Hamilton said he didn’t know about Griffin’s book unless I had seen it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears on C-Span. Now the readers of OneUtah know it. Nodody else does.
