Yes, it was just a matter of time. What makes it worse for the Republicans, the coal industry and Bush is that it makes those who fought Stickler’s nomination, only to have it circumvented by Bush as a recess appointment, now look like geniuses- again.

Here’s a reminder to tune in to The History Channel at 10 pm Monday night (in Utah) for their special, “9/11 Conspiracies: Fact or Fiction.”
There are four distinct 9/11 conspiracy theories to choose from. In the first two, the conspirators are members of a terrorist organization known as Al Qaeda. In the second [...]

The Monday morning quarterbacking on the Huntington mine fiasco began that first Monday morning August 6. Two Monday mornings later, the situation is worse than ever and there’s no answer in sight. Sound familiar? It’s been nearly two years since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and as my earlier post shows, the handling of [...]

Its not enough to just re-take Congress and the Executive and put professionals back in charge of our federal agencies. This time (unlike the Clinton era) we must take back the country by dismantling the lie called Supply-Side Economics, also known as “trickle down.”
I can only imagine the term Rove would have come up [...]

Why are we blaming Nature for the totally HUMAN-caused suffering and death at the Crandall Canyon mine? First Robert Murray. Now, Orrin “Sticking my Foot in My” Hatch refers to the botched mop-up-turned-rescue-turned-chaos-and-death operation as a “natural disaster.”
It wasn’t an earthquake. The “bumps” and shifting were caused by the mining of the mountain, [...]

What’s left to say about the disaster that is Crandall Canyon? The federal government and a strident, political mine owner tell us they know what they’re doing. They refuse help from a highly-trained, unionized mine rescue team. They ignore reports showing continuous, human-induced seismic activity in the mountain. Now, after more than a week of [...]

On August 15, I had an opportunity to serve as one of five judges for the Miss Salt Lake County Scholarship Contest. Before you ask, yes, this was once known as the Miss Salt Lake County Pageant and yes, is it actually a preliminary for Miss America. As a result, the contest followed strict rules [...]

The verdict: Yesterday Jose Padilla and two other defendants were convicted on three counts, including conspiracy to murder and providing material support to terrorists. The jury was out for only little more than a day. Padilla will be sentenced December 5 and faces life in prison.
Never mind that the government’s crimes against Padilla and his [...]

“War Made Easy” is a new DVD by antiwar activist and media critic Norman Solomon. The documentary puts the run-up to the invasion of Iraq in the context of how the US government has “sold” military operations to the public since Vietnam. The media often uncritically accept the [...]

On the heels of the Crandall Canyon disaster and numerous rejections of new coal plants nationwide, this urgent message comes from Tim Wagner of Utah’s chapter of the Sierra Club:
Dear Clean Energy and Clean Air Activists,
Our friends in Sevier County desperately need our help. The Sevier Power Company is pushing hard to obtain clearances to [...]
