This bodes ill for Nancy Saxton

For now, I’m not endorsing anyone for City Council 4.

In the past, Nancy Saxton has been effective ally on the City Council for progressive issues and causes.  Luke Garrott is unknown to me but seems to be in the right place on issues.

I think the money side of the race is looking bad for Saxton.

As of 8/30/07, Luke Garrott had $3972.96 on hand for his City Council campaign and had raised a grand total of $12,292.73.

By contrast, Saxton had $2974 on hand and total fundraising of only $2850.  Saxton’s mayoral campaign refunded many contributions when she dropped out of that race (good for her!).  The Saxton for Mayor campaign donated $1100 in cash and $400 in-kind to her city council campaign - meaning over half her council campaign is funded by a single source - her scuttled mayoral campaign.  A second donor contributed $1000.  IOW, three donations account for nearly 90% of Saxton’s total fundraising as of 8/30/07.

By contrast, Luke Garrott has a significant number of donors that include Pete Ashdown, Jackie Biskupski, Polly Hart, Donald Dunn, Jennifer Seelig, Jenny Wilson, Joe Hatch, Rebecca Chavez-Houck, Roz McGee, and David Litvack - it’s a veritable who’s who of Salt Lake City Democratic and progressive leaders.

Nancy Saxton has demonstrated some fundraising chops - she raised almost $70k for her mayoral bid in a couple months.  OTOH, some of those donors names are appearing on Luke Garrott’s donor list (ie Jennifer Seelig and Roz McGee).  The number of donors on Garrott’s list is important since it represents future donors - and while there’s no reason someone might not donate to both campaigns, it seems unlikely to me.  So, Garrott has a larger list of potential donors to contact - many of whom have donated since Saxton ended her mayoral run.

Nancy Saxton is a strong public speaker and pretty good on the stump - plus she’s got 8 years experience in city leadership.  This could be an interesting race to watch.

  1. DA Says:

Nancy made a promise to stay in the mayor’s race. Because of this I gave Luke my support. By the time Nancy quit running for Mayor Garrett was committed, and off and running.

I like Nancy, but her decision to disregard her promise made me realize that Nancy doesn’t keep her word, or does she care that her promise may have been a major reason as to why Luke committed to run his race in the first place.

SLC would be wise to retire Nancy and Hire Luke. Let the people fix the problem caused by Nancy’s lack of backbone.

DA - I wasn’t aware that Saxton had promised to stay in the Mayor’s race - then backed out. Nancy has been an ally on social justice issues in the past, but has demonstrated little follow through for the activisit community in Salt Lake.

Luke Garrott - interestingly enough - donated to Saxton’s mayoral race and now finds himself running against her.
