Ralph Gets it Right
Ralph Becker, as promised, proposed a Domestic Partner registry for Salt Lake City. As far as I know, City Council hasn’t voted on it yet but I suspect it will pass.Â
The DP registry is will allow health care, visitation rights, and some other rights of couples.
 Way to go Ralph!

Ralph obviously cares about the people in his city. No city in Utah has as many gay/lesbian people and many of them work for the city. Hopefully, the city council will go along with this proposal.

I was Rocky’s interim Communications Director when he passed the Executive Order giving benefits to partner benefits to same sex couples.
The local media went on a mindless feeding frenzy. Jill Remington Love saw her chance to build some name recognition and Dave Buhler took her under his wing and orchestrated the alternative plan which would have allowed city employees to designate a roommate for benefits.
Both did it because both planned on running for Mayor.
The city council went through the motions of a debate with the enthusiasm of a funeral. The Buhler/Love plan I never went anywhere, but propelled them both, for a moment, into the only spotlight in view. It was shameless grandstanding.
Good and loving people were scapegoated. A few brave souls registered a notice of intent to receive benefits knowing that this irreversible act of bravery would yield nothing but grief and humiliation.
Jill lost her democratic bonafides in this town. We all know what happened to Buhler. Both deserved it. Both have lost my respect forever.
It was a very sad and unfortunate stain on this city, its council and the local media. It only reinforced the negative stereotype of Utah and the hicks that run the place.
We’ll see if the local media makes hay of this?

Take a look at what the circle-jerk crowd over at ksl.com has to say about this.

If the comments weren’t so sad and hate-filled, they’d be hilarious!
