The Blood Oranges are In Season

I love the fact that this time of year, I eat citrus - I much prefer the flavor of blood oranges to navels.  When people see the dark red fruit, smaller than a grapefruit, they ask, in a short of fascinated horror, “What are you eating?”  They know it’s not a grapefruit, but most people have never seen anything like it before.

If you’ve never had one, it’s worth a trip to the store to get some.  The skin can be completely orange to dark red.  The flesh ranges from orange with red streaks to a deep ruby, the juice stains everything magenta, the flavor is tart and sweet, a mix of orange and berry, the scent is more distinct than regular oranges.

  1. WP Says:

What store(s) do you find them in?

Those oranges are popular with the tourists in Jamaica.

  2. Glenden Brown Says:

WP - they usually have them in Wild Oats/Whole Foods and Smith’s. Albertson’s has them less consistently. Those are the stores near me, so I can’t say if Harmons or Dan’s or any of the other stores carry them.
