Utah Embarrassed Again
Update: Plunderbund who broke this story is reporting that the manufacturer is refusing to make the sockpuppet.
Once again, pretty much everyone on the planet has been reminded that unrestrained racism is alive and well in Utah.
Introducing the Sock MonkeyObama. Brought to you by:

I sure as heck hope the Lawson’s aren’t Mormon. Despite the oft heard, “don’t judge the Church by it’s members,” if they are LDS, this would be another opportunity for the LDS Church to take a stand on the rampant racism festering in West Jordan, home of our long-time mascot of Mormon racism, Senator Chris Buttars.
The reason there are only nine LDS Wards (churches for the uninitiated) within five miles of the Lawsons, is because their subdivision backs up to the mountain. I’ll know by the end of day, if these Lawsons are active or not.
What is clear, is that the Lawsons are racist. Their feeble excuses smack of cutesy, innocent apologetics which in Utah have become an art form.
1} Provide a cuddly toy for the millions of Obama fans to take a little piece of their favorite candidate home with them.
2} Have a means for children to become a part of the political process with a cuddly plush toy all their own.
Our local racists bloggers are out in full force singing the same tune. It goes something like this:
You’re just one of the brainwashed political correctniks who are obsessed with race. With your obsession with race, it sounds like you’re the real racist.
We will never heal the racial divide as long as there remain people like you who are obsessed with race. We are all supposed to be Americans FIRST. Or perhaps you don’t understand what it means to be an American.
Deseret Dawg has a blog and a post on this subject.
The first comment on his post says:
Actually, this sock puppet looks and acts more intelligent than ZER-Obama. Have you heard this worthless nigger? He can barely form complete sentences. It is most likely from him freebasing cocaine while screwing the mudsharks on his campaign tour.
He links to the following organizations. National Alliance News (white supremacist hate group), The Mormon Church, The Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, LDS Conference Reports, LDS Information Website, LDS Official Website, and much more.
If I were LDS, I’d spend every waking hour getting this guy booted.
Note: I want to be clear, many Utah Mormons are not racist. However, we rarely see the Church disavow admitted racist members.

Thanks very much for writing this post. I have to believe that it’s not that simple, that the communities are well-known to one another there and there might be some risk, but really, thank you. This kind of expression by you and Plunderbund and others of course can only help. Binkley was able to see how others were bothered - I am positive that more Americans are able to as well, even if they don’t see it - but just to know how it hurts other people. That just can’t be okay.

I didn’t realize until I read the paper that this was coming from Utah. What’s a worse image for the state? Racist, or not able to recognize racism because utterly clueless about 21st Century America?
I suppose FightTheSmears will have to post a denial now– Barack Obama does NOT have a tail!
June 15th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
It needs to be remembered, the Mormon Church credo now accepts black members as priests who might possibly ascend to the highest levels of the organization. Somehow I do not think that the Lawsons’ or thier buyers will be among the select.
June 16th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
While I agree that this sock puppet is despicable, you’re not innocent yourself–by strongly implying that Mormons are all racists.
Despite your token comment at the end of the post, your whole post seems to say, “They MUST be Mormon, because they’re racist!”
Prejudices and stereotypes work both ways.

A follow up on another subject. How are we to interpret this?

And, of course, a story about such a sensitive subject would not be complete without input from our racist, repugliscum nutcake friends over at ksl.com:

The Obama Sock Monkey might be making a comeback, according to the Deseret News.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Oh my heck! Those comments on ksl.com really seal the deal.
Utah is still full of racist Mormon pigliscum!
June 17th, 2008 at 10:37 am
So, let me understand this
Bush being called Chimp - good
Obama portrayed/ called Chimp - bad
Is that the way it goes?
June 17th, 2008 at 10:48 am
Bob:
There you go again, making excuses for BushCo!!!
In case you didn’t notice, Bush is not black and Obama is.
You are really becoming quite predictable, Bob!!
June 17th, 2008 at 10:50 am
My personal opinion is that the office of President of the United States deserves a certain level of respect, no matter who holds the office. I never have compared Bush to a chimp, or even commented on his startling resemblance to Alfred E. Neuman.
OTOH, we still have freedom of speech. Why not exercise it?

K-I-S-S-I-N-G
Yes, its true Bob (I feel like I’m talking to a second grader), You cannot make comments that associate black people with monkeys of any species or raccoons for that matter.
It has something to so with an ugly racist past we suffer in this country.
Now. You can either throw bombs at it and rub salt in the wounds, or you can try to be a good Christian or secular humanist, or just a decent guy and SHUT THE FUCK UP!
June 17th, 2008 at 11:25 am
Being a believer in evolution myself, the funny thing about comparing Bush to a monkey is that he has said “the jury is still out” on the issue of evolution. The statements and decisions he has made in office invoke thoughts formed in the lower reptile brain. In responding to Bush, my lower instincts are also sparked, and I hate that. He has wasted 8 years of precious time that I could have been using to gain a better appreciation of the arts or science.
I don’t think Obama is much concerned with the sock puppet. He has much more important things on his mind.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Bob, you have to look at it in terms of derrogation of the Chimp.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Cliff,
Show me where the Constitution says that free speech is allowed except for things that might offend *** (insert what ever protected class here).
Politically correct speech is one of the gravest threats to our freedoms today. By limiting, often by law, what people can and can not say, our right to express ourselves, to even protect our way of life is being curtailed.
This is another example of the double standard of politically correct “no so free speech”. It is okay to call Bush a Chimp, but not Obama…and you say it’s because Obama is black. Isn’t he half black? Could he be called half a chimp?
Freedom of Speech is only truly free when people are allowed to say the most repugnant things you or I can think of. If we limit things to what don’t offend anyone, there can be nothing to say because someone will be offended by it.
Want to make fun of Bush, go ahead but don’t turn around and say that the same phrase is off limits because of someone’s skin color - that’s discrimination.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Republicans should be accorded every opportunity to openly express their racism. I wouldn’t dream of stopping them!
June 17th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Can’t we all just get along? Have opinions…and still get along? Oh? We can’t? Thank you for clarifying that.
June 17th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Well guess what. The racists Lawson must have found a toy manufacturer that agrees with them as they have reconsidered and are going forward with this despicable campaign. They should be ashamed.
June 17th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
I do not see what is despicable about this. If it was a liberal ethinic person living in louisana these would be selling like crazy. Since it is a white person in a conservative state they get thier freedom of speech and right to capitalisim taken away? Doesn’t seem right to me.
June 17th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
You’re an idiot! A majority of people against racism are racists. Go watch “Crash.” I love it how you morons always have to bring the LDS church into issues like this as if it were their fault. Have you seen the LDS church anywhere near being involved in this issue? Religious discrimination is just as bad as racism. Grow up. You liberals always have to try and get your 5 minutes of fame and undo what the major want.
June 17th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Perhaps the developers should equip the sock-puppet with a voice box that when the string is pulled says things like: ‘One True Church’, ‘I was caught lying, but since I’m the president now…’, ‘One question I’d like answered is whose hand is up my butt?’ ‘Animal rights…an idea whose time has come!’
Psst, Walt,..the majority wants Bush and Cheney GONE! So I guess, we really want them to stay on forever! I’m rising up!
June 17th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Wow, this is the home of the trolls. I wondered where they all went after mainstream bloggers ran them off.

Bob Currie:
Say something intelligent, and I might be inclined to engage you in debate; but say something stupid, and you have a pass right back to ksl.com where you belong!

“I’ll know by the end of day, if these Lawsons are active or not.”
Yes, the lawsons are raciest. I really dont know why we even care if these people are mormons or not. It truly shows that you are not a member of the mormon faith and have a negativity towards it as most non-mormons do in Utah. Seems to me the mormons do a lot of good in the world and Utah is full of anti mormons ready to try to link any bad or negativity to the mormon church. Why do we care if they are active or non active or members of another denomination. Every religion out there has their crazies and to try to cut a religion down a christian religion because of some idiot not being faithful to those believes almost crosses the line of anti christian.
June 18th, 2008 at 8:16 am
It is obvious that freedom of speech applies only to liberals, only they can make outrageous inflamatory remarks. In reality, the post on Desert Dawg probably came from a liberal trying to stir up the “mob”. Has anyone else noticed how vitriolic and hateful some of the remarks are from liberals? I thought the liberals were supposed to be the “inclusive” party??? Obviously they are inclusive only if someone professes to be a liberal. Remember some of the hate filled liberal rhetoric when they thought Colin Powell was going to run for VP, or some of the comments about Condi (from the left)?
June 18th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Craig, I think you have misinterpreted my post and taken it personally. I can understand your defensive reaction but…
I said,
Point being the same as yours EXCEPT, you seem uninterested in holding the Church to a higher standard of accountability.
I think it is hypocritical for the church participate in conduct social engineering and excommunication for perfectly moral acts (like writing books or being gay) but then shrink away from the immoral behavior in its own community.
June 18th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
If this Lawson couple were racists wouldn’t they have made a zebra doll instead of a loveable monkey?
June 18th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Clarise:
The answer to your question is No. They wouldn’t have. On the other hand, because the Lawson couple is racist (or at least blinded by their racist faith), they logically thought of the monkey to carry out their racist attack, thinking all the while of the curse of Cain taught by their racist church.
I hope that clears the issue up for you.
June 19th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Comon’ guys, you are talking about racism towards blacks when you exhibit the same prejudice towards LDS members. Don’t get me wrong I’m not mormon, nor do I feel this doll deserves this much attention, but when I see such hypocracy aimed at my state of residence, I get upset. As far as the race issue is concerned, I believe there is a happy medium when it comes to the “race card”. In some cases I find it very unfortunate that an individual is judged based on something other than character and integrity. I also believe that in many situations the offended exhibit more of a closed mind than the offender. All of it is unacceptable and people need to be honest with themselves about the issue and realize that two wrongs have never made right.
June 19th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Jon:
Just wondering … are you of the opinion that the decision by the LDS church - from its inception until 1978 - to deny blacks the priesthood was not rooted in racist beliefs?
June 20th, 2008 at 1:09 am
Well, Albert O., Jon’s silence appears somewhat deafening.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:20 am
Jon,
I must challenge you to find one comment on this blog which by any standard could be considered racist against Mormons.
Criticism of the church or individual members is just that criticism. Criticism is not racism.
