Witness List for Tomorrow’s Impeachment Hearing

The Table

Thanks, Raw Story. The House Judiciary Committee has released a witness list for its hearing on the impeachment of President George W. Bush.

Late Thursday afternoon, the committee released the full witness list, broken down into two panels.

Panel One

The Honorable Dennis Kucinich, Representative from Ohio
The Honorable Maurice Hinchey, Representative from New York
The Honorable Walter Jones, Representative from North Carolina
The Honorable Brad Miller, Representative from North Carolina

Panel Two

The Honorable Elizabeth Holtzman, Former Representative from New York
The Honorable Bob Barr, Former Representative from Georgia, 2008 Libertarian Nominee for President
The Honorable Ross C. “Rocky” Anderson, Founder and President, High Roads for Human Rights
Stephen Presser, Raoul Berger Professor of Legal History, Northwestern University School of Law
Bruce Fein, Associate Deputy Attorney General, 1981-82, Chairman, American Freedom Agenda
Vincent Bugliosi, Author and former Los Angeles County Prosecutor
Jeremy A. Rabkin, Professor of Law, George Mason University School of Law
Elliott Adams, President of the Board, Veterans for Peace
Frederick A. O. Schwarz, Jr., Senior Counsel, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law

See below for hearing updates…

Conyers (D-MI) previously laid out six areas the hearing would explore:

(1) improper politicization of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorneys offices, including potential misuse of authority with regard to election and voting controversies;

(2) misuse of executive branch authority and the adoption and implementation of the so-called unitary executive theory, including in the areas of presidential signing statements and regulatory authority;

(3) misuse of investigatory and detention authority with regard to U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, including questions regarding the legality of the administration’s surveillance, detention, interrogation, and rendition programs;

(4) manipulation of intelligence and misuse of war powers, including possible misrepresentations to Congress related thereto;

(5) improper retaliation against administration critics, including disclosing information concerning CIA operative Valerie Plame, and obstruction of justice related thereto; and

(6) misuse of authority in denying Congress and the American people the ability to oversee and scrutinize conduct within the administration, including through the use of various asserted privileges and immunities.

The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday on Capitol Hill.

It looks to me that none of the witnesses are likely to provide inside information about how the Bush administration lied to Congress to obtain authorization for the invasion of Iraq.

UPDATE:
Glenn Greenwald opines:

[T]he Kucinich impeachment hearing is like a parade of those whom the Beltway class mocks as Shrill, Unserious losers and Leftist radicals — people who actually use overly excitable words like “crimes” and “prosecutions” when talking about our leaders or who, like the ACLU, actually object that most of what our Government does occurs in total secrecy. Serious, responsible Beltway establishment leaders know that courtrooms and prosecutions are only for the common people and — for our own good — our leaders cannot, must not and should not be exposed to any of that, and must continue to be able to shield what they do from public scrutiny.

What we need is the equivalent of the 1973-74 Senate Watergate Committee, a bipartisan fact-finding entity prepared to uncover every Bush administration crime by grilling the insiders who know what happened. Instead, we have this “parade” of well-meaning but political witnesses.

UPDATE: Raw Story reports that few members of the Judiciary Committee or witnesses dare to utter the dreaded word “impeachment” because members were cautioned to abide by the Rules of the House, which prohibit lawmakers from “impugning” the president’s character during official debate. Apparently, under the rules the Republicans can call an immediate halt to the proceedings if anyone says the “secret word.”

UPDATE: I suppose this hearing is officially a non-event, because none of the related DailyKos posts made the rec list. If the DailyKos community isn’t very interested in impeachment, then it truly is a dead issue.

  1. Larry Bergan Says:

    Vincent Bugliosi seems like a pretty interesting inclusion. I hope these guys come out with guns-a-blazin’! ” We can’t let Bush pardon a single person, including himself!

    Help us media. Please do your job! It’s really up to you. All of the arguments against impeachment are ludicrous and you know it!

  2. cav, profligate consumer Says:

    Well, now that the elf supporting nutcakes have had their say, let’s get back to jamming our heads under the sand so that the serious leadership can persue thier god given emissions and further develop cluster munitions, spying and enhancing our would-wide carbon bootprint.

    Look…over there, John McMane ate schnitzel!

  3. Richard Warnick Says:

    I miss the Watergate hearings. There was a report that John Dean would be testifying today, interestingly enough. But he’s not on the list.

  4. Larry Bergan Says:

    I’m dying for this hearing to finish loading off of C-Span’s website so I can watch it from the beginning, which won’t be until I get off work tomorrow apparently, but it looks pretty darn damaging to Bush from what I’ve seen.

    Time for the gerbils to start furiously spinning the wheels in the pundits heads so they can tell us what really happened today.

    Because much of the nation will not be able to watch, due to the fact that it isn’t being broadcast on public television like the Watergate hearings, much disinformation will be given to them from the Republican noise machine.

  5. Larry Bergan Says:

    I did catch one funny moment where Vincent Bugliosi was testifying, saying that WMD’s really didn’t have any relevance to the discussion because if they did, we would be attacking Israel, Pakistan, North Korea, ect.

    Some nitwit with an R after his name, wanting to shut Bugliosi down, blurted out “Mr. Chairman, he’s giving away national security secrets!”

    Wow! Bugliosi has access to national security secrets? That’s the first time I’ve felt safer since Bush TOOK office!

  6. Larry Bergan Says:

    Bob S and jd are pretty silent about Kucinich’s hearings. Have they stopped defending The Great Uniter?

  7. Bob S. Says:

    Larry,

    Unlike some if I’m not informed on a subject I try not to comment on it.

    I have not been able to follow the hearings in detail. Nor have I read about the subject due to work load etc.

    Nor have I seen any comments that require a response until this one.

    More to come later, if needed.

  8. Larry Bergan Says:

    I don’t get it. I tried to download the hearing three times, and it stalled every time. Now, I can’t get anything on C-Span to play. Can anybody else see the hearing? It has been moved off the front page but it still there. Just can’t play it!

    Everything seemed to be working fine this morning except the downloads.

  9. Cliff Lyon Says:

    I find RealPlayer works best. Try that?

  10. Larry Bergan Says:

    I AM using Realplayer. It worked fine yesterday morning as far as watching anything I wanted to on C-Span, but just wouldn’t let me download the entire thing. The live feed works fine, even today, with RealPlayer at C-Span.

    And RealPlayer still works fine on Democracy Now!

    Apparently C-Span switched channels on the hearing, making it hard for people trying to TIVO it to see the hearing according to Peter B. Collins. That happened to the Addington, Yoo hearing too.

    Why don’t republicans have this much trouble getting the information/crap they want?

    Take a look at this. The FCC is trying to force C-Span off cable in a round about way. Paranoid! Me?

    Hey, why should I complain, I was able to watch coverage of the hearing on Olbermann’s 2 minute segment with commentary by Bob Barr. What else could you need, but the opinion of the freak who tried to impeach Bill Clinton for a blow job.

    I hope Paul Mero is reading this and laughing his ass off. Yes, it’s true another liberal is having a bad day. You win again.

    USA, USA, USA!
