The World Watches Bejing Olympics as China Continues its Violations of Human Rights

During the time leading up to the Bejing Olympics, the Chinese government assured the world that the development of human rights would be strengthened. However the Chinese government continues to restrict its citizens’ fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, freedom of association, and freedom of religion. Labor rights, Children’s rights, Women’s rights, and access to health care to patients with HIV/AIDS, a very serious health issue in China, all are also compromised by the restrictions on the people living under the Chinese regime.

Yesterday the Olympics opened in Bejing, amongst its visitors diplomats from around the world, but not without protest.

Imagine the situation: The heads of democracies swarmed to Beijing to participate in opening ceremonies which took place under martial law.

What? You aren’t going to spend 10 bucks on a Kobe Bryant “redeem team” pin? That’s a human right.

Hard to face, but the world has turned to the dark side.

As best as possible, I am not watching the marketing show, one for a pile of trinkets and crap, the other for totalitarian dictatorship.

Very effective contrast between the China the the Chinese government wants us to see and the China it doesn’t want us to see. What kind of society is it that a city must be placed under virtual martial law to hold the Olympic Games. What is it afraid of. What is it hiding? A Harvard scholar is denied admission into his own country while at the same time the IOC chairman is announcing the opening of the Olympics by saying China is the “Gateway to the future”. God help us all. Keep up the good work Deanna.
