“The Speech” (part three)

Foreign policy part of the speech.

” . . . John McCain likes to say he’ll follow Bin Laden to the gates of hell but he won’t even follow him to the cave where he lives.”

He’s calling out John McCain.

“We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of kennedy. Don’t tell me Democrats won’t defend America. Don’t tell me Democrats won’t keep us safe . . .”

He’s laying out classical, liberal internationalism - building and working within alliances of nations to defeat enemies.

He has called out McCain twice now.

“Patriotism has no party - i love this country and so do you and so does John McCain . . . They have served the United States of America.” So, it was a totally naked applause line but it was GREAT.

“I got news for you John McCain, we all put our country first.”

“Part of what has been lost these past eight years . . . is our sense of common purpose. That’s what we have to restore.”

“. . . surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and deserve to live lives free of discrimination.”

” . . . if you don’t have any fresh ideas than yo use stale tactics to scare voters . . . you make a big election about small things. It has worked before . . .”

” . . . This election has never been about me. It is about you. It’s about you. For 18 long months you have stood up one by one and said “enough!” to the politics of the past.”

” . . . the change we need doesn’t come from Washington it comes to Washington.”

” . . . it is that American spirit, that American promise that pushes us forward even when the path is uncertain that binds us together, that makes us fix our eye on what is unseen, that better place around the bend . That promise is our greatest inheritance.”

“we cannot walk along, the preacher cried, and as we walk we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead . . . we cannot turn back. Not with so much work to be done. . . . we cannot turn back, we cannot walk alone, at this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future.”
