Tom Shales, writing in the Washington Post, describes the McCain call for change this way:
It really is an audacious ploy, to tell people that the country’s got to correct the mistakes made by a political party when that’s the very party you represent.
It’s like staging a revolution against yourself — saying that the Republicans have got to go so the Republicans can move in and clean up the mess.

Also, the Republicans never mentioned torture except in reference to Senator John McCain’s Vietnam experience.
The Dems are soft-pedaling by saying that McCain represents “more of the same.” McCain’s policy goals are worse than Bush’s in many ways– especially in foreign policy.
