Sooo…you can’t support a war or make military decisions unless you enlist in the military. Is that it, Cliff?
From this, I’m assuming that you didn’t support American efforts in Afghanistan, Bosnia, France, Korea, Japan, etc.
Is this correct, Cliff? You’re a true pacifist (with the noteable exception of threatening to shoot some folks)?
Not only is the whole “chickenhawk” canard logically empty, but taken to it’s logical conclusion it takes military decisions out of the hands of anyone who has not served. This is exactly the opposite of our system: The military answers to civil authorities regardless of whether or not they’ve worn the uniform.
You heard it here first folks, only people who volunteer to serve in the military can make decisions to go to war and support that war. Our honored tradition of civilian leadership has just been trashed be the great honorable Cliff Lyon.
Of course, by your standards, Cliffy - I assume that you’ll be voting for McCain since Obama has never served….
Chickenhawks are making national security decisions right now, in the Bush administration. That’s why our strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan is such an epic fail.
The so-called “surge” in Iraq was a political stunt thought up by chickenhawks like Fred Kagan and rejected by the Iraq commander General Casey, the CENTCOM commander General Abizaid, and the Pentagon brass.
Cliff– General Petraeus did experience combat, however his first experience was as a division commander in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He was awarded a Bronze Star for Valor, no one seems to know what for (it ought to have been a Bronze Star for Service).
Where do you come from that you get to decide everyone else’s standards?
Try this one JD.
JD - “So Cliff, by your standards people who go to meetings to help promote the war, should at least take a few years off to serve, otherwise they are chicken hawks”
That is the only standard I am setting JD … if you could even call it that.
Regarding the former governor of MN (can you post to all of your praise of him while he was governor, Cliff?) -
Uh…Jesse?
We have a volunteer military. Parents don’t “send” their children to war.
I realize that this concept is difficult for some who think that it’s their birthright to control the lives of others - but it’s the society we live in.
[The term chicken-hawk] is a silly smear for the reasons given above, to which could be added the following: The United States now has an all-volunteer Army, made up of people who receive fairly good pay and many health and educational benefits. They signed up to a bargain when they joined, and the terms of the bargain are obedience to the decisions of a civilian president and Congress. Who would have this any other way? If the entire military brass and rank-and-file opposed a war with Saddam, they would be as obliged to keep their opinions to themselves as they would if they favored nuking Basra. . . . This is a wall of separation that must not be breached, for the sake of the Constitution. (Mind you, I have the impression that if the “armchair” arguers got their way and asked only war veterans what to do about Saddam Hussein, there would have been a rather abrupt “regime change” in Iraq long before now.) Chris Hitchens
Anyway, the just did a round robin in the Gulf War to get as many officers as they could be activated in a war zone.
It was so long since VN, I guess there was a generation of officers who were never gonna see battle unless they went to the Gulf one.
But I heard Petreaus got sick and hung back in a rat hole shitting his pants. Hey. I would be too, and I’d goddamn well want a fuckin medal for it too!

JD,
I don’t think that was Blumenthals thesis.
I think the thesis is; war-mongering College Republicans are chicken hawks.
But that was just the thesis. The real message of the video is College republicans are some of the dumbest people if seen…I mean as a group.
Really uninformed, status-driven, wanna-be’s. Trailer trash really.

Yep. its like the more killing experience you have, the more likely you are to be canned for offering you advice.
Christ. The only battle Patreaus ever saw was a bout of diarrhea in a lousy hotel.

Sid the head bartender at the “Last Chance” in B town was president of the young republicans while I was there. He lived on my floor.
He used to sleep 17 hours a day, listened to the Police all waking day, and sprack heavy.
He was a true leader. Led the trashing of the floor lounge, makes Iraq look like a Sunday outing.

Cliff, by your own standards, you aren’t allowed to comment on the war (unless you have some heretofore undiscovered military experience).
Gosh - somehow I’m guessing that you thought only the little people enlisted.
Am I right?

Richard,
Does a division commander generally see combat?
Anyway, the just did a round robin in the Gulf War to get as many officers as they could be activated in a war zone.

Ah Christopher ‘the Whore’ Hitchens.
Boy he sure is singing a different tune these days.
September 10th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Cliff, you can’t comment on the current war. Sorry. You didn’t serve.
You’ll have to run all your comments through Bob or Richard.
…
Now that is settled, did you support Clinton’s military campaign in Serbia/Kosovo?
September 11th, 2008 at 5:44 am
Just for the record, I think General Petraeus has got what it takes to be a good commander, but he has a fatal flaw– lack of integrity. Admiral Fallon accurately characterized Petraeus as an “an ass-kissing little chickenshit” because he sold his soul to Bush. Chickenshit is not as bad as chickenhawk, though.
September 11th, 2008 at 6:34 am
But Richard, isn’t integrity a basic requirement for leadership?
Petraeus’ ass-kissing in practice means sending more 3rd and 4th to die, or go home without limbs.
By taking the job, he kicks sand in the face of more great generals (and an Admiral or two) than we can name in this little space.
I hope they drum him right out of the military when Obama is elected.

Cliffy - can the comments, chickenhawk.
Your rules. You didn’t serve. You can’t comment.
Hush now.
