Fake NY Times Anticipates Future Good News

Via Raw Story: Early this morning, commuters nationwide were delighted to find out that while they were sleeping, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had come to an end. If, that is, they happened to read a “special edition” of today’s New York Times.

Fake NY Times

The paper, post-dated July 4, 2009, was allegedly printed by the parodists The Yes Men. Articles in the paper announce dozens of new initiatives including the establishment of national health care, the abolition of corporate lobbying, a maximum wage for CEOs, and, of course, the end of the war.

“IRAQ WAR ENDS: Troops to Return Immediately,” according to the biggest headline. “Ex-Secretary Apologizes for WMD Scare,” reads another.

In an elaborate operation six months in the planning, 1.2 million papers were printed at six different presses and driven to prearranged pickup locations, where thousands of volunteers stood ready to pass them out on the street.

UPDATE: Check out their terrific fake New York Times website: http://www.nytimes-se.com/

The fake edition of the Times even included a long-awaited mea culpa and farewell from columnist Tom Friedman, who confessed that being so incredibly and consistently dead wrong about Iraq “has made me realize, among other things, one incontestable fact: I have no business holding a pen, at least with intent to write.”

This is hardly a parody, it is a basic requirement if we are to survive as a planet.

Does it mention permanent detention camps for republicans?

The Yes Men are pretty darn good. They have dvd’s and a book – available at the slc public library.

This is what I want for Christmas. Not the newspaper, but what it says.

    Richard W.

You know that the war is already over. It ended on Nov. 5th when Obama was elected. We are now just waiting for it to become official the day after the inauguration when the fighting will stop COMPETELY and the troops will come home in a “reasonable” time.

    Becky,

Your Christmas gift is about to come true, regardless of how many Iraqis must die at the hands of death squads in a power vacuum. Ho Ho Ho! Unless of course Obama lied to you prior to the election… Hmmm

R.O.– I think most people understand that the right is trying to lay down a fact-free fable that says “victory” was “in sight” until Obama spoiled it all. I’m thinking about doing another Iraq post soon, and I hope you can elaborate on the terrible consequences of calling off the occupation. More than 70 percent of Iraqis and a similar percentage of Americans want it to end.

You see OkelCrusader. This is where you give me the shivers down to my very core.

Whenever someone suggests Bush couldn’t have fucked up the World any worse, I am reminded that if enough Americans possessed the kind of sadistic, barbaric, hyper-Crusading, sword wielding, mind-numbingly archaic, medieval, pathological, psycho-religious fervor, that you do, we Bush might have dropped a couple ‘ nukes already.

…and you could have been on your way to heaven already while I fry.

Where did you say you earned you expertise in Middle Eastern Culture, conflict, History and Politics?

Or was it just a PhD in modern warfare?

What happens to the Jews again?

Re: cursing with color and style…

“…sadistic, barbaric, hyper-Crusading, sword wielding, mind-numbingly archaic, medieval, pathological, psycho-religious…”

Now, THAT’s what I’m talkin’ about. And so appropriately directed.

    Nicely played Cliff.

    Cliff,

You might need to get one of those little pill organizers for your meds… Your rambling again!
