‘Salt Lake City has learned how to protest’
Check out Andrew Sullivan’s blog for a rundown of today’s nationwide rallies in support of same-sex marriage and civil rights for all– including Salt Lake City. Sullivan writes:
When every gay person and every friend or family member of a gay person really, truly believes that the status quo is unacceptable, we will win. Today, I think we reached a tipping point. Now our task is to find a way to channel that conviction more aggressively, with more focus and professionalism. We will. And the next generation will lead the way.

And one of Sullivan’s readers replies: “I’m not gay. I don’t have gay friends or family. This isn’t about homosexuality. This is about civil rights.”
“People around the country were watching this very closely,” said Kellan Baker, a Washington, D.C., resident who is organizing today’s protest there. “For Californians to go to the ballot box to strip people of civil rights they had been enjoying is, I guess, the last straw.”
In Salt Lake City, where demonstrators gathered just blocks from the headquarters of the Mormon church, one sign pictured the city’s temple with a line adapted from former Republican vice president candidate Sarah Palin: “I can see discrimination from my house.”
Today, a police officer told KSL-TV’s Alex Cabrero to expect more rallies in the future: “Salt Lake City has learned how to protest.”

Remarkable post on Sullivan’s blog. Impressive crowds of people everywhere. Moving comments sent in from the protestors.

Andrew Sullivan was very late to the game, but the Mormons fucked up.
