AP News Calls Begich the Winner in Alaskan Senate Race

With Mark Begich having a lead now of over 3,000 votes, AP is calling the race over. Only 2,500 votes remain to be counted, making the difference too great to overcome. Begich will go to the senate from Alaska. I suppose this dashes any hopes Sarah Palin had of becoming the next senator upon the inevitable resignation of incumbent and convicted felon (I never get tired of saying that) Ted Stevens.

But more important, it’s one more Democratic vote closer to the magical, filibuster-proof 60.

UPDATE:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has lost his bid for a seventh term.

The longest-serving Republican in the history of the Senate trailed Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich by 3,724 votes after Tuesday’s count.

That’s an insurmountable lead with only about 2,500 overseas ballots left to be counted.

Stevens, who turned 85 Tuesday, also revealed that he will not ask President George W. Bush to give him a pardon for his seven felony convictions.

    Updated election results released Tuesday show that Salt Lake County voters favored Barack Obama over John McCain — but just barely — marking the first time in decades that a Democratic presidential hopeful won the state’s most populous county.

    With the addition of more than 29,000 provisional and late-arriving absentee ballots, President-elect Obama scored a come-from-behind victory over McCain. The county’s official election canvass didn’t change the outcome in any other race.

    Obama trailed McCain by about 1,900 votes before the provisionals, cast mostly by people who moved but didn’t change their voter registration, and absentees were added.

    The final result gave Obama a 296-vote victory, which equates to less than one-tenth of 1 percent.

    A Pyrrhic victory, but a victory nonetheless.

    Thanks for the info!

    I’m glad I didn’t miss that one! I always like to feel smarter as a Utahn because it rarely happens.

    I don’t have any money to donate to campaigns these days, but I had someone call on behalf of Al Franken, so I chipped in a little. Al has been a good soldier against the republican “revolution”, but it as ironic that he has been scared to say anything about the unverifiable voting machines. He is the only Air America host who wouldn’t talk to Brad Friedman about them.
