Neocon Insanity: Those Iraqi Ingrates

National Review contributing editor Andrew J. McCarthy imparts the following words of wisdom:

INCONVENIENT FACT: THE IRAQIS DON’T LIKE US

Iraqiis don't like us

Thousands of American lives and hundreds of billions in taxpayer funds have been expended to provide Iraqis the opportunity to live freely. And this despite the facts that (a) the U.S. interest in Iraqi democracy remains tenuous (our interest was the elimination of Saddam’s terror-mongering, weapons-proliferating regime), and (b) Americans were assured, when the nation-building enterprise commenced, that oil-rich Iraq would underwrite our sacrifices on its behalf. Yet, to be blunt, the Iraqis remain ingrates. That stubborn fact complicates everything.

The neocons were even expecting Iraqis to name a Baghdad square after George W. Bush. Imagine their disappointment.

Brad at Sadly, No! comments:

Of all the weird beliefs that neoconservatives have, the weirdest by far is the idea that foreigners should actually enjoy having their countries invaded and occupied. I mean come on, ungrateful Iraqis, only it’s not like anyone has been killed during this glorious liberation! Christ, the way these whiny jerks tell it, you’d think that millions of them had been forced to flee their homes and that millions more have been forced to live without access to potable drinking water!

Matt Yglesias comments:

It’s nice to see that Andy McCarthy is putting aside his crazy anti-Obama conspiracy theories and getting back down to his core competency of incredibly stupid commentary on national security policy.

our interest was the elimination of Saddam’s terror-mongering, weapons-proliferating regime

We all remember how the reasons given for the war in Iraq had to evolve to keep up with facts as various lies were exposed: No yellow cake, no weapons of mass destruction, no mobile bio labs. And once Saddam, the ultimate target and symbol of our war, was captured, did the war end? No, we tied Iraq somehow to 9-11. And I kept asking myself, who the hell are we shooting at over there? Iraqis, of course. But why?

Why indeed would Iraqis like us or want us to stay?

  2. Richard Warnick Says:

Becky– Just a point of information, there was quite a large stockpile of yellowcake (uranium oxide) in Iraq prior to the invasion, 550 metric tons in fact. Iraq even has its own uranium mines. This is why the fake Niger documents and Bush’s ominous declaration in the 2003 SOTU made no sense.

Many people don’t understand that highly-enriched uranium (20-85% U-235) is required to make nuclear warheads. This is why the media is able to scare people about Iran’s “nuclear program” which is incapable of producing nuclear weapons.

  3. Becky Says:

Thanks, Richard, I didn’t know about the existing yellow cake and the mines in Iraq. I think it’s good to remember the words we heard, so we don’t forget the lies and how wrong this war was from the start.

And since you mention the media, it’s also interesting to review this Glenn Greenwald article in Salon from last May regarding the complicity of the media in the misinformation campaign.
