Tim DeChristopher
Please thank Tim in a comment on this post. And please also donate whatever you can to his legal defense.
Yesterday, in a brave act of civil disobedience, Tim DeChristopher threw a Monkey Wrench into one of the Bush Administration’s parting shots at environmentalist and the American people.
Please ask everyone you know to register their gratitude and support for Tim here or on his statement.

Tim,
Wow! I just finished watching Democracy Now with your interview and I am really impressed with what you did. You are a true Amercian Hero, and I think you actually represent the change that we have been looking for. Thank you so much for getting time for that pristine wilderness and for doing what you can to stop the devastation that the corporate world was trying to create. It was a highly creative and amazing act of civil disobedience that had a real effect, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your story brought tears to my eyes.
Bless you, and Happy Holidays!

In a region of the country so blessed with renewable energy resources, there is no reason to move so precipitously toward the irreversible destruction of our collective heritage. Were the lease of these lands legitimate, they would also prove to be so under the next administration and after due deliberation as prescribed by law. The decision to proceed so preemptively was an act of arrogance by an authority whose power is soon extinguished and whose legitimacy has been long depleted. We now suffer under a graceless corruption of power and can ask only that our media outlets and our federal prosecutors reframe from enlarging upon in this corruption by taking this young man to task for having the courage to do what we all know needed to be done.

tim,
when i heard your story on democracy now, i was interested and curious but when i heard you say that you had (forgive my paraphrasing) waited and waited for someone to come along and take action before you stepped in, i was moved. how many of us die waiting for that “someone” to come when we were the someone all along. bravo!

Tim I just want to thank you so much for your wonder action at the BLM’s auction. It was brilliant and so simple. It may be a one shot thing, but very worth while. Every time I see a news report about it I want to stand up an cheer especially when other bidders complain of how you ruined their auction. May you live long and inspire other acts of culture jamming.
#12 by Christine M on December 24, 2008 - 4:35 pm
Tim – Just when one feels overwhelmed by big-money interests that ignore the true depth of how much their actions will impact our delicate world, something *wonderful* happens. When I heard what you did, I was heartened and thought, ” Someone DID something about it!” My second thought was, “My hero!” I can’t imagine I can write anything more eloquent than others have already, but I did want to add my voice to the many applauding you for your courage and strength of character. You may have bit of a long haul ahead of you, but it would have been a long haul on any other road- so why not take this route?! Keep heart – I, and many others, are deeply grateful, and will not forget what you have done. Thank you.
#13 by gizmo on December 24, 2008 - 9:56 pm
Great work Tim ! Thanks for what you have done for us all.
I’m curious whether there is a movement to pay for the leases that you bought? $1.8 million shouldn’t be that hard to raise for a good cause. One approach would be to find a big non-profit, a bank, or a wealthy individual who would be willing and able to front the money, and then we can work at paying them back. It can be done, and there is no shortage of smart people who can make it happen.

Thank you, Tim. You are truly a hero. My husband and I had the good fortune to take a drive through part of Utah a couple of years ago. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the land out there. It was truly breathtaking and made me want to cry, for some reason. I remember saying something to my husband about who might own the land. I told him at the time that nobody should be allowed to own it. I was sickened to read that the bastards in the White House are selling it to oil and gas companies. And then you came along. I will certainly help with your legal defense fund. Thank you again. Let’s hope Obama will figure out a way to save places like this permanently.
#16 by Tim DeChristopher on December 25, 2008 - 10:07 am
Thank you all so much for your support. It gives me real hope for my future to see so many others who are willing to stand up and take action. While my act may end up protecting some land and keeping some oil in the ground, the real significance will be seen when all of you take action to resist the path of destruction that we are on. That is the greatest Christmas gift I could have asked for. I hope to see you all on March 2nd in Washington DC. Thank you and Merry Christmas to you all.

Thank you. It would be a shame if people with money destroyed every thing beautiful in this world all for the sake of making more money. We should cherish the beautiful world around us and not think of every things worth in the amount of dollars it can put in our pocket.
It is nice to see someone without money preventing people with money from destroying a beautiful area.

Nice going. But don’t be shy about connecting with defense money. This is a galvanizing moment. Check out the ideas for litagating funds on CD 12/22/08 Bush’s Mission Accp’d article. there is something there that could be fruitful.
#22 by Tim DeChristopher on December 25, 2008 - 8:14 pm
Jeff, thanks for your comment. My “shyness” about connecting with defense money comes from the fact that asking for donations is most of what the environmental movement has done for as long as I can remember. While I do need defense money, what I need even more is people taking action of their own. It’s no longer OK for any of us to just send money and sit back and trust that someone else has things covered. It will be easier for me to survive without defense money than without people in the streets. The US Attorney isn’t threatening the death penalty, but the planet is!

Thanks for your bravery. A person only needs to come here to south Louisiana to know what oil and gas companies can do to a landscape–carve it up so much that the land disappears. If only all of us would have your courage, Tim, perhaps we could save this country yet.

Dear Tim,
Thank you for your intuitive action. Unbelievable that this event has remained in the dark for practically a week. Repression and secrecy has been the nature of this administration. Thank God it will soon be over.
Have you raised the $45,000? If not, can you make a partial payment or get an extension?
An opportune way to really help this planet now, would be to create a land trust mechanism or entity with the ability to follow through on your bid. Personally, I would be honored to participate by raising awareness, funding and even developing select areas in an eco-friendly way, i.e. solar.
Godspeed,

“I’ve seen the need for more serious action by the environmental movement and to protect a livable future for all of us. I’ve seen that need for a long time. And frankly, I’ve been hoping that someone would step up and someone would come out and be the leader and someone would put themselves on the line and make the sacrifices necessary to get us on a path to a more livable future. Tim, what a clever idea to disrupt a public auction with fraudulent intentions. I want you to know that you can count on me for $20,000 to help you in your endeavor. I hope this helps.
Oh, by the way, I should tell you that I don’t have the money and that I have no intention of making good on this pledge.
#49 by Julianne Fitzgerald on January 4, 2009 - 2:31 pm
Dear Max – this was not a “public aucti0n”. This auction was thrown together at the last possible minute, sort of like the Bush administration tossing hand grenade’s on our environment on their way out of office.
The lands involved in this fraudulent lease-sale are among the most fragile in our nation. For this regime’ to trade our future water resource to facilitate a dying industry (oil usage – global peak oil has come & gone), makes no sense at all. If all Tim did was buy time and raises awareness about Sustainability, then it was well worth it. And thanks for offering $20k, it would be great, but honestly, I’d prefer seeing 400 people give $50. It is time for Everyman/Everywoman to take part in our Democracy, which has been taken to the very limit of its existence at this critical time in our collective history.
Thanks Tim – for being willing to risk it all.

#54 by Michael Raysses on January 6, 2009 - 12:27 am
Lest anyone mistake his acts as civil disobedience, let’s call a spade a spade, shall we? Mr. DeChristopher’s acts were nothing short of the kind of heroism and leadership exhibited by all great people: he acted in the interests of the society to which he is a member in the highest of standing, and he did so peaceably, honorably, and most remarkably with no idea of what the outcome would be for him personally, let alone for the common weal.
Tim, beyond the small contribution I can make toward the cost of your valor, please consider me your own personal editor, at your disposal whenever you need. As a freelance writer, I am proud to offer my pen as your sword.
All the best and then some,
Michael Raysses
#55 by Julianne Fitzgerald on January 6, 2009 - 8:16 am
Dear Mr. Raysses; What you express above is entirely True. One comment that Tim made in the days following the auction was that ‘when you stand for truth, you never stand alone’. People are recognizing the simplistic brilliance of Tim’s choice. The fact that it was extremely peaceful and yet so effective, is not being lost on any of us. We all are resonating and also realizing that if the radical changes necessary are going to be made, it’s going to take actions like this one. Fighting begets fighting. Tim accomplished so much more by simply raising a paddle & nodding at the right time.
We welcome your writing talents on http://www.bidder70.org, where you can blog, write articles and generally support Tim. Your offer of support is genuinely appreciated. This is a movement – and we’re all walking on this path!

#62 by Gabriel Caplett on January 12, 2009 - 2:00 pm
Tim,
I was very impressed with your act of peaceful civil disobedience.
I live in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (Lake Superior) and am fighting a company that is very near to your university – Kennecott Minerals. They are trying to open a metallic sulfide mine on public land that is within ceded tribal territory. They’ve submitted a fraudulent mine application that was approved by our state government.
Our representative, in the Governor’s office, recently resigned to work as a lobbyist for the company.
All very corrupt and disheartening, and in such a beautiful, wild area with clean water.
Anyway, we started our Protect the Earth summits last year. In the 1980s the Indian tribes and citizens in Wisconsin had them because of the treaty issues surrounding the harvesting of walleye. They evolved to encompass the anti-sulfide mining struggle there (also Kennecott).
We have learned a lot from our neighbors in Wisconsin.
I would like to invite you, as a speaker, to our Protect the Earth summit, later this year. You would be very inspirational to residents here as we continue fighting this mining operation and preventing it from happening.
I hope you receive this blog post.
Take care,
Gabriel C.

Tim, and all high-minded, passionate environmentalists: check out treating land values as a commonwealth revenue: progress.org Why should gifts of nature, including urban land, be treated as a source of private income? Socializing land rent via the property tax (or another mechanism) will END land speculation.

Dear Tim,
Your courageous action is a concrete example of the importance of living a principled life – I cannot believe what the U.S. Attorney’s office has done. If Obama is true to his principles and his statements on personal responsibility to our nation, then he must intervene. Please post what pressure we can place on the Administration to commend your actions rather than punish your honorable actions.
I campaigned for Obama based mostly on his commitment to defend and protect our planet. I expect nothing less.
I promise to follow your case, and do what I can to help. Thank you for your courage and for being a beacon of light.

Don’t just thank Tim, who is amazing for what he did, donate to his attorney.
But more than that, demand that Obama pardons him! He was unjustly charged for interrupting an auction that was ILLEGAL. Next time Obama has an online town hall meeting, vote up a question regarding Tim to the top! Link the videos on youtube, tell your friends.
Obama has NOT BEEN LISTENING TO HIS VOTERS. You need to TELL HIM that if he does not, he will LOSE OUR SUPPORT. WE ELECTED HIM, and he said he would listen to us, you have to MAKE HIM listen.

I like the way those who agree with Tim have come together to support him. Regardless of whether you believe he did right or wrong, it is great to Americans supporting eachother. We should all do more of that. If more of us cared about our noble neighbors, we help some good people out of unfair hardships.
Take the students at a flight school in Cedar City, Utah. The flight school recently closed and left many young men and women, who invested everything into trying to start a career forthemselves, holding huge bills of debt. Some of those students had just started and recieved little or no training before the school closed it’s doors. The flight school was collecting money from people up to one business day before they closed, and I’m sure they knew what they were doing. If everyone who has responded to this thread donated a few dollars, and spread the word, we could do a lot to help these young people finish thier flight training, so they have a way to pay back thier loans, and thier young lives aren’t forever riddled with financial hardship.
I think from time to time we should all find a noble cause, and come together to help our neighbors

Levi,
Even though your comment is off topic, this is one of those issues that I think the state could do more to prevent. I blogged about a similar incident a year or so ago when Silver State Helicopter training school shut down. This probably deserves a separate post. Thanks for commenting and good luck.

You rock! We need more people like you in this world. Thank you

I did stray off topic, but my overall point was that it’s great to see so much support for Tim. I think he did what a lot of people wanted to do. I for one thought that I followed current events enough to know what was going on around me, but on the day Tim went to that auction, I had no idea that all that wilderness was being auctioned off. I believe the public should have had a say in the auctioning off of public lands.

That’s ok, Levi, you reminded me I wanted to do a top post on that story too.

There is no failure in dying or being improssoned for for a just cause, like Martin Luther King Jr. battling unjust laws as a requirement of his social contract, you took a bullet for the planet as a whole. The Obama administration is only pressing charges to make a point and I believe they are well aware that you will never go to jail as the charges are unsubstantiated.
One day it will be my turn to stand up when no one else will and when I do, I will remember you as a source of strength, one of the few role models our generation has been graced by. I too was failed by the generations that preceded me, but they were also failed in their own by the generations that preceded them. Let us be the ones to break this cycle, like the Buddha broke his cycle of suffering resulting from his obsession with the “ego”; the “I”.
It is time for our actions to co-align with our sentiments so that our souls may be harmonized. We have been duped into thinking we are helpless and powerless for to long. Let us unleash the power of intent and right action. Thanks for fighting for the most important battle in the war against over-industrialization and laissez-faire capitalism!

Hey Tim,
I guess this is the best way to contact you. I had the pleasure of seeing you speak at Wild and Scenic back in January. I was especially touched because a lot of what you described as a “personal responsibility” to our future and the environment is exactly what drives me to do the work that I do as well (environmental/human rights documentaries).
I went out of the country for a project, directly after that festival, and am finally able to come through and follow up on my idea of contributing to your cause.
I have always been a runner and one of the best ways to appreciate nature for me, is to go for a long run in it. There is a half marathon in Moab in October. Here is a link to more information:
http://www.moabhalfmarathon.org/other/other_race.html
I wanted to run the race to raise money for your defense, and hopefully rally up a team of people who would do the same. I run races, but have never really found a cause I wanted to direct my efforts towards.
I’m not sure if the race touches on any of the land that you saved, but I know that it is pretty close. What better race to run for the cause?
If you or someone else could contact me on the best way to do this for you, and maybe get me some facts/pictures I could put up on my fundraising website I would appreciate it. I know the race isn’t until October, but I am always training and I would like to get a site up this week.
Thanks and keep up the good work!
Hayley

Thank you Tim for saving mother earth from people who have no conscience in preserving it’s beauty’s. You may serve several years in jail but those years will be well served with a clear understanding that what you did was a noble cause and sacrifice. Thanks.

Dear Tim, BRILLIANT & COURAGEOUS. Thank you so much for the courage to act on your convictions. I wish I had thought of it — and then had the courage to do it.

Tim,
We’re inspired and got your back here in the West Virginia mountains. Thank you for standing up and doing the right thing. My son says even good people go to jail sometimes if they are brave and stand up for the land. We’ve had over 100 people arrested here to stop MTR. Wish we could all get together and celebrate the many blessings we do have. Much respect for your actions, Jen Osha

We need so many more people of conviction like yourself if we are ever going to abolish our corporate government and make it a government for the people again. I am very grateful for your stand, Tim; I just wish that there had been a hundred or so like you on that day in Utah and that those high numbers would have dissuaded the courts from threatening you with $750,000 fines and years in prison.

It is a sad day when a man is not allowed to defend himself and his actions in a court of law based on his motives for those actions. If Tim DeChristopher ends up going to federal prison, democracy fails.

You’re an inspiration Tim – heard about you on DN! – have you hooked up with recently released fellow planet hero Jeffrey Luers who I also heard about on DN! today:

Tim,
Please call me. I may have something that can help.
We have been monitoring the number of cattle that graze in allotments. Field surveys and aerial counts on a number of BLM allotments show that fraud is involved. BLM knows about this widespread problem and even though we have been raising this for years, ignored us and taken no action.
Thanks Jim Catlin 801 328-3550

How did that idea come to you? very clever, Got other ideas? Because of you, Amy G, and folks like Zinn and Chomsky, my son and I went down to the election office and filed to run for congress. We are learning lots and really liked your Craigs list thang… how did that work out?

That was a great thing you did! We always have to protect Mother Earth. Right now, here, we are fighting to prevent “Fracking”, hydraulic gas drilling which will desimate the country almost as much as mountain top removal! Our thoughts and wishes are with you.
