Sarah Palin vs. Science

Sarah Palin and polar bear

In honor of Sarah Palin’s visit to Utah today, I’m going to comment on her WaPo op-ed about climate science. We’re so fortunate that leading intellectuals like the former Alaska governor and author of Going Rogue are bringing us their insights, as 192 nations convene in Copenhagen to address the worldwide crisis of global warming. Some of the countries at the conference are small islands whose very existence is threatened by rising sea levels.

Yesterday, the World Meteorological Organization released its finding that 2009 is the fifth warmest year on record. The decade of 2000 to 2009 appears to be the warmest one since reliable record-keeping began in 1850.

The international assessment on temperatures from 2000 to 2009 largely meshes with an interim analysis by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the United States, which independently estimates global and regional temperature and other weather trends.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has made a long-delayed finding that greenhouse gases pose a danger to human health and the environment, paving the way for regulation of carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles, power plants, factories, refineries and other major sources.

So, thank you to Sarah Palin for focusing your intellect on the search for solutions to the greatest problem facing mankind today.

Apparently, Sarah Palin said that climate change is a result of “fraudulent scientific practices.” She’s an idiot. Never mind.

If this freak show from Alaska had been as critical of Bush during the run up to war in Iraq as she is re global warming, 4500+ US soldiers and 100,000+ innocent Iraqi civilians might still be alive today.

    Happy,
Thanks for the classist snobbish inaccuracy.

She received her Bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in journalism. This is not some defense of her, just trying to stay within the bounds of reality.

BTW, do Harry Truman’s credentials satisfy you?

Well, one thing I am sure we can all agree on is Palin does not reflect terribly well on the quality of the communications program at Idaho!

Then again, Palin’s ability to communicate lies upon lies is rather astounding. Maybe the department/program isn’t so bad after all.

FF– It’s called pushback. The Washington Post is trying to endow Palin with credibility, even though I’d bet actual money that she didn’t even write her own op-ed. The op-ed itself is an attempt to peddle the false “climategate” story in order to get in the way of a major worldwide effort to address climate change.

Federal Farmer’s rhetorical comments mark a new evolving tactic among the right-wing as it slithers deeper into the underworld.

This new tactic involves questions which beg other questions, none of which have to do with substantive issues but are rather designed to self-validate the questioner’s own cleverness and impugn the targets character and intentions.

Frank Stahali is fast becoming a master at this. Federal Farmer is not far behind.

I celebrate this new low by the same people who promote greed, war, torture, destruction of the Earth and general meaness.

If Sarah Palin is so ridiculously stupid, why do you spend so much time assailing her?

We spend so much time assailing her because we refuse to permit a repeat of allowing the equally stupid republican populace to elect the equally stupid George Bush into the White House.

This video more or less sums it up.

    Any further questions, FF?

It is obvious why she must be attacked by the left. She draws a crowd and can easily beat any Democrat put up against her. You guys have lost, Copenhagen is a bust, no matter the argument. Politics trumps junk science, great bed fellows really.

Of course what with this miserable failure of a president, it will all too easy for her, if that is what she wishes to do.

Speaking of greed and war mongering, progressives have 1 of 2 choices, it is Obama in charge of the Afghanistan debacle, or he is just a Cheney pet, puppet.

Even Sarah knows this, and she has the sand to make it stick and average America will believe her and no Democrats after the African Prince liefest . This is the States, assess your political disaster in the making realistically and you may have a chance.

You really don’t have a chance against her that is for sure, the best tactic is to ignore her, as what you perceive as her weakness, intelligence, will only alienate you in the manner of attack from average Americans who identify with her. Obama is sinking like a rock, and her stock just rises. This is not a battle you want to fight, she revels in it, and is an absolutely polarizing person, and does not cater to interests she disagrees with.

    The People love her.

I know there is really no point explaining this to you as you cannot believe it and won’t listen, the fact is, you are empowering her. The attacks end up a richochet that strike harder upon the attacker than the target. You don’t know what you are dealing with. I guarantee it.

Well it is not because of her keen intellect that is for certain. Incredible stupidity and dangerous demagoguery are not mutually exclusive concepts. See #10 above.

  15. #15 by shane on December 10, 2009 - 11:36 am

i personally don’t feel i spend any time assailing her.

The point is Shane, they will not, I point out that your tactics against her are pointless, and by going on about it, you simply give her more exposure.

These are not posts you really want to make. There is no way to win as the polarization is already set, all you can do is make more folks aware of her, and that won’t work well for progressives.

Hey yeah prog girls and boys, when Rove says you are making the right decision vis a vis Afghanistan and the escalation, where do you fools all sit now on that?

    The People love her.

Sarah Palin continues to post gruesome poll numbers for a supposedly serious presidential contender. The latest CNN poll found that only 29 percent of Americans believe she is qualified to be president. That number represents a significant decline from perceptions of her qualifications during the campaign, which were already terrible.

  18. #18 by Glenn Hoefer on December 10, 2009 - 12:11 pm

Makes you wonder while governor how she managed to renegotiate the Alaska oil revenue take from North Slope with the oil majors that control it. Last time I checked they don’t give money to idiots, or to anyone if they don’t have to.

She managed to produce the biggest dividend check in Alaskan history 3303 dollars for every single resident in what can only be described as a rare sharing of the wealth plan that is quite socialistically motivated.

You can’t beat her, no way. It has to have you worried what with Obama being total f*ck up for most progressive causes.

  19. #19 by shane on December 10, 2009 - 12:46 pm

ya know glenn, the fact that you say making fun of her us a bad idea is about the best endorsement i can imagine.

Richard, that means 29 percent of Americans are too dumb to walk and breath at the same time.

I think a study should be done on the left’s obsession with Sarah Palin. It seems that she gets more mentions and press coverage on lefty sites than on conservative sites. My prediction is that she would have drifted back to obscurity in Wasilla if it were not for the left’s obsession with her. The obsession of hating her so much.

I suppose on conservative sites they do the same thing. They probably obsess on the clownish figures on the left which are easy to make fun of and make some political hay about. Not like there is any shortage of Bidens, Pelosis, Reids, Murthas, Rangels, Franks, Jeffersons, etc.

It’s called pushback. The Washington Post is trying to endow Palin with credibility, even though I’d bet actual money that she didn’t even write her own op-ed. The op-ed itself is an attempt to peddle the false “climategate” story in order to get in the way of a major worldwide effort to address climate change.

Point taken, Richard. Nevertheless, I don’t agree that WaPo is trying to endow her with credibility. She is a public figure who has a strong following across America, and could potentially run for president in 2012. I would think that it’s only fair to give her a chance to express her views. And by the way, did you read WaPo today? As far as I could tell, one of the op-ed pieces seemed to pose a challenge to Palin’s take on Climate Change. Hardly a deliberate attempt to “endow” Palin with credibility.

Cliff, reading your comments always makes me roar with laughter. If it isn’t the hyperbole, it’s the overwhelming hypocrisy.

I’m actually kind of flattered that you would interpret my words as some kind of subtle “tactic” for furthering my clandestine Right-wing agenda.

For the record, I don’t support Sarah Palin, I have no desire to read her book, and I would never vote for her if she were to run for the presidency in 2012. I do think it’s a little ridiculous, however, that you and your like-minded rabble feel so threatened by her that you would feel inclined to constantly demean her intelligence and refer to her fans as something less than human.

It is truly revealing that my couple of sentences would be interpreted as a shameless promotion of “greed, war, torture, destruction of the Earth and general meaness.” Isn’t that a little hyperbolic, Cliff? I especially like the “general meaness” part. This condemnation coming from the man who frequently demeans those who do not agree with his narrow-minded ravings by referring to them as “idiots,” “morons,” and “bad Americans,” among other things. Sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it?

Sorry, Cliff, call it a subversive tactic originating from the depths of hell, but I can’t help but roll my eyes when you constantly harp about Sarah Palin’s lack of intelligence. It just seems kind of desperate. I don’t like Sarah Palin, and thus, I ignore her. It works for me.

We spend so much time assailing her because we refuse to permit a repeat of allowing the equally stupid republican populace to elect the equally stupid George Bush into the White House.

And I’m sure that the “equally stupid Republican populace” gives a flying f**** what you have to say on a blog which they have never heard of. Let’s face it, you fancy yourself some kind of suburban intellectual and you gratify yourself by assailing the intelligence of those who don’t agree with your worldview. You know, we can easily find any political figure from any party or movement, and determine that the individual is a complete idiot. But by doing so, we really aren’t making much of a difference, and we are simply displaying a contemptuous attitude of arrogance and high-minded hatred.

  28. #28 by Cliff Lyon on December 11, 2009 - 9:06 am

FF, You seem to have a hard time distinguishing between talking about the issues and talking about yourself or my feelings.

Im not interested in the latter. And you are wrong on the former.

She DOES NOT have “strong following across America.” But she is dangerous nonetheless, because she appeals to the sort of person who bought Bush’s wars “hook line and sinker.”

As Governor of Alaska, she advocated for carbon reduction and other strong environmental policies. Now suddenly, she is pushing the climate gate BS. Just like Romney was for Choice until he ran for president and went far right.

While you are still figuring out how the world works and have you panties in a bind about the media and your cynicism runneth over, other wiser folks are past that and looking deeper.

For the record, had you paid attention to the progressive blogoshere and the independent media when you were in high school, you might not have wasted so much of your time cheering Bush on with you buddies at school and in church.

  29. #29 by James Farmer on December 11, 2009 - 9:12 am

Interesting poll results from Ipsos. The poll asked whether people believe that the world’s temperature “has been going up slowly over the past 100 years.”

    Republicans– 57% yes, 43% no.
    Democrats– 82% yes, 16% no.
    Independents– 68% yes, 23% no.

It gets more interesting. Of those who believe the earth is warming, a whopping 72% of Dems and 66% of independents believe that it’s the result of human activity. Only 42% of Republicans agree.

I hate to admit it, but I agree with Glenn’s initial statements. In brief:

Sarah Palin isn’t brilliant; she isn’t informed; she isn’t a leader; she hasn’t the brains of chutney pineapple sauce when it comes to doing more than smiling and waving. She is simply a figurehead for a movement that centers itself around self-perceived martyrdom. Her cult of personality is the perfect validation for a people who want to be outraged and seek every opportunity to do so. She is like a handicapped child placed at the front of a marching army to force the enemy to commit an atrocity; she isn’t “fighting the good fight” or any other such nonsense, but her presence and the natural gall of the opposition fuels her followers’ insistence on their own persecution. She serves to march the Christian’s into the lion’s den to prove that they’re still dying purposelessly in the name of integrity. It’s a ridiculous spectacle.

Fortunately, most of the country (even conservatives) is too smart to put a symbol of martyrdom in a key government position simply to validate self-perception. But there will always be those Carrie Prejean, Joe the Plumber, Sarah Palin worshipers who find more stock in similar accents, clothing, and (mostly pretended) circumstances than in actual meanings–who value nationalism more than patriotism. For the media, they are an intensely marketable minority. For they’re followers, they’re precious manna, to be saved and savored day after day. For the rest of us, the influence they have on perspective, regardless of their concrete political power, is too great to just ignore.

So what do you do when a threat arises that gets stronger whether you fight it or not? I think Glenn knows, as we all know instinctively by now, that if Palin were ignored, a new kind of outrage would be found, and the threat she poses would be nourished. Are we to dither between caring and not caring? Outrage and nonchalance? They all feed her purpose, because demagoguery is self-reinforcing. Cults of personality last long after death. I foresee Palin becoming the female gipper–we’ll call her the “chipper,” and liberals and conservatives alike will fondly recall her endless Miss America pageantry and winky, angry smiles.
