Hell, for $10.00, I’ll endorse Mr. Cannon

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

Hell, for $10.00, I’ll endorse Mr. Cannon and quickly enrich Christian’s campaign fund.
But Christian must assure me that, as his first name implies, he can fix it with God so that my endorsement of Mr. Cannon does not violate the Christian injunction against oaths, giving unto Caesar the things that Caesar already owns, supporting an [...]

Griswold is more important the Roe (edited)

Monday, October 30th, 2006

I’m not a lawyer- that’s Ed Firmage’s territory – so I may be completely wrong.  But, I think Griswold v. Connecticut is a more important decision than Roe v. Wade.
In Griswold, the Supreme Court held that citizens have a right to privacy.  Griswold was the basis for Roe and Lawrence (striking down state sodomy laws).  [...]

I Was a Republican

Friday, October 27th, 2006

In 1964 I was a moderate Republican and I was heart-broken that Romney, Rockefeller (whom I supported), and Scranton were were not only defeated, but intentionally savaged, about like politics today, by members of their own party. I feared Goldwater. I later learned what a splendid man he was. I think he would have been [...]

Mitt Romney

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

Mitt Romney’s relations with the Mormon Church come at a bad time for Mr. Romney. Just after a respected poll indicated that 38% of American voters would not vote for a Mormon for President, Mitt’s people crossed the church/state wall in an embarrassing incursion. Mitt is an able man [...]

Utah is the Nation’s Time Bomb II

Monday, October 16th, 2006

After sixteen pages of ads and some news of various sensibility, the Salt Lake Trilbune with its new ownership, informs us that EnergySolutions wants to add 83 feet of nuclear material…..That’s eight stories high, folks, all above ground, better to reach and to serve you. Through your water, in your air, and in the ground [...]

After sixteen pages of ads and some news of various sensibility, the Salt Lake Trilbune with its new ownership, informs us that EnergySolutions wants to add 83 feet of nuclear material…..That’s four or five stories high, folks, all above ground, better to reach and to serve you. Through your water, in your air, and in [...]

Meanwhile a War Rages

Monday, September 25th, 2006

I’m shocked that the previous post got so many responses while a war rages, a president and his cronies defy the Constitution, devastate human rights, and fight with tenacity the right of people to the security of their homes, their communication, their bodies; by denial of habeus corpus, eviscerating the First, Fourth, and Fifth amendments, [...]

Mr. Bush’s War…An International Disaster

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

George Bush–along with Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and Paul Wolfowitz–have led this nation into one of the great disasters of the last century. This war now threatens to become a war between Islam and the West. When Mr. Bush used 9/11 as a pretext for invading Iraq, a nation at peace with the United States, [...]

Voices for Democracy In Our Southlands

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Emily Hollingshead has written a splendid article (below) which speaks to the essence of American democracy, in the spirit of Martha and Thomas Jefferson and Abigail and John Adams. Though history would see them in opposing parties, in reality, they, with James and Dolley Madison, spoke above partisan politics. They were among [...]

Under Pressure, Senator Hatch accepts the “cut and run” strategy.

Saturday, September 2nd, 2006

Reposted from August 31st 2006
On Wednesday August 30th I expected George W. Bush to speak to the American Legion National Convention as his office had announced in earlier in the month. As the day approached for Bush’s visit we learned that the American Legion would also be visited by Secretaries Rice and Rumsfeld. It was [...]

Blame Rocky or Bush?

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Paul Rolly’s column in today’s Tribune reports that American Legion officials are blaming a lower than expected turnout for the Legion’s meeting in Salt Lake City upon Mayor Rocky Anderson’s opposition to the war in Iraq. Might it just be that even members of the American Legion are beginning to be disheartened by the President’s [...]
