It’s not the filibuster-proof 60, but it’s awfully close.
Associated Press:
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Democrat Jeff Merkley has ousted Republican Sen. Gordon Smith, a victory once considered unlikely against an incumbent who had highlighted his efforts to work across the aisle in hopes of surviving a wave of anti-GOP sentiment.
Smith’s loss — the first for an [...]

At first, I was going to simply ignore this blog as just another outlet for right-wing crackpots to post their sicko, truth distorting, America-hating whacko rhetoric while yucking it up and patting each other on the back (and swilling warm, stale beer).
The more I thought about it, however, the more I felt that [...]

As a teen and young adult in the 60s and 70s, I was disillusioned with the American government particularly because of the Vietnam war and the administrations of Nixon and Johnson, with their roughshod treatment of citizens as well as our Ugly American image abroad. I believed that once my generation came into political [...]

Amidst the joy of an Obama win is the bad news - truly bad, depressing, despairing news. Proposition 8 in California - stripping the rights of gay and lesbian Americans to marry has passed.
I’ll let Autumn Sandeen from Pam’s House Blend say it for me:
And in California, we had Proposition 8. As [...]

For the first time in my life, I am really proud of my country.
…and congratulations to First Lady Elect Michelle Obama.
h/t Clammyc
In 2004, there was talk about how “the people have spoken” and how this was a “clear mandate” that gave Bush “political capital”. However, if that was the second straight questionable election which [...]

The audience is booing every time he mentions Obama. God they suck.
“America offers opportunities to all who have the industry and will to sieze it.”
“Let there be no reason now for any American to fail to cherish their citizenship in this the greatest nation on earth.”
“These are difficult times for our country and I [...]

From McJoan at Big Orange, discussing the prospects in the West:
Utah has been emptied out. Much of its money has gone to California and Arizona to try to get those states to ensconce discrimination against gays in their state’s constitutions, and most of its progressives have spent their weekends traveling to neighboring states to get [...]

Sorry, I couldn’t help it.
Let me be clear, I am going out on a limb here as I do not trust the Nazi Neocon machine.
Vote rigging (here, here, here) and voter intimidation (here, here), here is in full swing today. Anything can happen.
DO NOT EXHALE yet. Our national nightmare is not [...]

It’s hard for me to believe how historic this election day is. Whatever the outcome, it will be a first for our country. I am personally so thrilled to be witnessing this. The first time I voted was in 1968, by absentee ballot, voting as a Utah resident while living in Dover, [...]

It has begun!
Shortly after the stroke of midnight EST, the town of Dixville Notch, NH (pop. 75) threw its support to Obama, 15 to 6!
Dixville Notch residents voted overwhelmingly for Bush in both 2000 and 2004, but not this year.
The town has, clearly, revamped its analysis re the person most qualified [...]

From Progressive Future:
An American Tune
Paul Simon
I don’t know a soul who’s not been battered
I don’t have a friend who feels at ease
I don’t know a dream that’s not been shattered
Or driven to its knees.
Oh, but it’s all right, it’s all right
For we lived so well so long.
Still, when I think of the
Road we’re traveling on
I [...]
