The Crucible

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

I’ve criticized Andrew Sullivan’s commentary before; on issues of sexuality, he’s one of the best out there. But he seems to consistently misread American politics as Labor versus Tory, instead of Democrats versus Republicans or progressives versus conservatives. Every now and then, he hits one out of the ballpark so I keep reading. [...]

What’s all this about Rashid Khalidi?

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

The Wall Street Journal published a press release from the Republican National Committee, providing a run-down and bio information about Khalidi. The intent is clearly to make Obama look anti-Israel by his association with Khalidi.
However, to quote Rachel Maddow, this is the old ‘I’m rubber and you’re glue . . .’ dilemma. Turns [...]

McCain May Lose Arizona

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

A new poll from Arizona State University suggests that an Obama win is not at all out of the question. The numbers: McCain 46%, Obama 44%, within the ±3% margin of error. The previous ASU poll from a month ago put McCain up 45%-38%.

Taking Healthcare Seriously

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

I’ve been pretty open that I think the US should adopt a single payer plan. I’d probably run it at the state level (similar to Canada’s system which is administered at the Provincial level), but I think at some point the US will adopt a single payer system that pays for health care while [...]

Closing Arguments

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

I heard a bit of Biden’s speech today. He said (to paraphrase) we can no longer be a red country and a blue country. We are one nation, under God, indivisible. Get up and take back this country we love. This summarizes the final message from Obama/Biden. The desire is to [...]

Trouble in Paradise

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Apparently there is trouble between the McCain and Palin camps. According to CNN:
[A] McCain source says she appears to be looking out for herself more than the McCain campaign.
“She is a diva. She takes no advice from anyone,” this McCain adviser said. “She does not have any relationships of trust with any of us, [...]

Who Wants To Bring Back The Military Draft?

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

In the comments on various recent posts, One Utah regulars have been going back and forth about whether Senator John McCain or Senator Barack Obama, if elected President, would be forced to ask Congress to reinstate the military draft.
One commenter posted a link to the transcript of the ServiceNation Presidential Candidates Forum at [...]

McCain Now Going Full Bore Pushing Racism and Laughing About It!

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

With McCain standing right beside him Former Army Staff Sergeant David Bellavia, in his introduction of Jogn McCain said: “You can have your Tiger Woods, we’ve got Senator McCain.”
..and McCain chuckled.
There is little left to say. No one could have convinced me that in this day and age, a presidential candidate (even a Republican) [...]

Slaying the Slime. Death by Blogosphere: A Day in The Life

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Update: “(CNN) — Bail was set at $50,000 Friday night for a GOP campaign worker who made up a story about being attacked by a man angered by a John McCain bumper sticker on her car.”
I’ve decided to try to write more commentary that documents the role of The Internets in destroying the right-wing slime [...]

When All Else Fails, Tell The Truth

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Could it be that John McCain has run out of lies? In the latest in his long series of drastic campaign strategy changes, he’s finally getting around to telling the truth about George Bush’s failed presidency.
Voters are very afraid Senator McCain will extend Bush’s policies that have led to foreign policy and economic catastrophes. [...]

Iraq: End in Sight!

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

My favorite documentary about the occupation of Iraq is Charles Ferguson’s “No End In Sight.” It clearly lays out the mind-boggling ineptitude of the Bush administration’s attempt to govern a country they had little or no knowledge of, with predictably disastrous results.

After more than five and a half years of this fiasco, there is [...]

The Internet and the Death of Rovian Politics

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I’m posting this article because it speaks well to one of the overriding purposes for starting this blog in January of 2006. John Dean had already demonstrated the power of the Internet by raising some $48 million.
I started blogging at on Slate’s Fray when it looked like Bush might actually get re-elected. [...]
